1. During a campaign, 8 Republican and 5 Democratic candidates are nominated for


president of the school board.
i) If the president is to be one of these candidates, how many possibilities are there for
the winner?
ii) How many possibilities exist for a pair of candidates (one from each party) to oppose
each other for the election?

2. Automobiles come in 4 models, 12 colors, 3 engine sizes and 2 transmission types.


i) How many distinct automobiles can be manufactured?
ii) If one of the available color is blue, how many different blue automobiles can be
manufactured?

3. A collection of eight different books consists of two books on artificial intelligence,


three books on operating systems, and three books on data structures.
i) How many ways can the books arranged on a shelf so that all books on a single
subject are together?
ii) How many ways can the books arranged on a shelf so that the three books on
operating systems are together?
iii) How many ways can the books be arranged on a shelf so that the two books on
artificial intelligence occur at the right end of the arrangement?

4. 25 buses are running between two places P and Q. In how many ways can a person go
from P to Q and return by a different bus?

5. There are 30 laptops in a computer center. Each laptop has 14 ports. How many different
ports to a laptops in the center are there?

6. In how many ways can we select three students from a group of five students to stand in
line for a picture?

7. How many strings of 4 English letter are there if


i) no letter can be repeated.
ii) starts with letter “X”, and if letters can be repeated.
iii) starts and ends with vowels, if no letter can be repeated.

8. A bag contains 2 white balls, 3 black balls and 4 red balls. In how many ways can 3
balls be drawn from the bag, if at least one black ball is to be included in the draw?

9. Jennifer has 6 jeans, 8 blouses, and 5 hair dressers. How many outfits can she select if
her outfit consists of one jeans, one blouse and one hair dresser?

10. Among the seven nominees for two vacancies on the city council are three men and four
women. In how many ways these vacancies can be filled
i) with any two of the nominees?
ii) with any two of the women?
iii) with one of the men and one of the women?

11. A student has to answer 10 questions, choosing at least 4 from each of Parts A and B.
If there are 6 questions in Part A and 7 in Part B, in how many ways can the student
choose 10 questions?

12. In a class of 12 students, a project is assigned in which the students will work in
groups. Three groups are to be formed, consisting of five, four and three students.
Calculate the number of ways in which the groups can be formed.
13. Given a committee of 4 people has to be chosen from a panel of 10 people.
i) If two certain persons must be on the committee, in how many ways can the
committee be chosen?
ii) If two certain persons must not be on the committee, in how many ways can the
committee be chosen?
14. A storeowner plan to have his annual “Going out of Business Sale”. If each month has
an equal chance of being selected, find the probability that the sale will be in a month
that begins with the letter J or A.

15. Approximately 9% of men have a type color blindness that prevents them from
distinguishing between red and green. If two men are selected at random from a large
group of men, find the probability that both will have this type of color blindness.

16. At sales meeting, there were 15 men and 24 women. Eight of the men and 10 of the
women were selected to sell a new product. If a salesperson were selected at random
find the probability that the salesperson was a female or a person who was selected to
sell the new product.

17. A bag containing lettered Scrabble pieces has the following letter distribution.

18. A bag contains 3 blue beads and 2 red beads. A second bag contains 1 blue bead and 3
red beads. If one bead is drawn from each bag, find the probability that
i) both beads are blue.
ii) one blue and one red.

19. I have 6 gold coins, 4 silver coins and 3 bronze coins in my pocket. I take out three
coins at random. What is the probability that they are all of different material? What is
the probability that they are all of the same material?
