1
Static load test – Method Statement

1. Purpose

The aim of this Method Statement is to describe the tests procedure that will be
performed on bored cast-in-situ pile. The type and frequency of the tests will be as
follows:
* Compression load test for non-working piles, details of test piles are clarified in
(Attachment-1).

2. Static Load Test

2.1 Scope

This test method covers the procedure for Compression Load Test of Piles to determine
the maximum settlement of pile to an impact static load applied axially by a Kentledge
method at the head of the pile.

2.2 Compression load test

➢ The pile will be subjected to controlled application of an axial load in compression.

➢ The pile will be tested when the strength of the tested cubes taken from the pile
concrete mix achieves the required compressive strength .

➢ 2.3 Work methodology

A. Pile head preparation.

➢ The pile head shall be formed to give a plane surface which is normal to the axis of
the pile.
➢ The top level of pile head should be at a minimum height equal to the pile diameter
above the cut-off level.
➢ The top of the pile head will be trimmed to the cutoff level.
➢ Cast the test pile cap with dimension 1.2x1.24x1m (reinforced with steel) or casted during pile casting
considering pile reinforcement should reach up to the top level of pile head.

2
Static load test – Method Statement

B. Kentledge Method

➢ The platform supporting the Kentledge foundations, beams and other supporting
structures shall not experience any differential settlement and has to be verified.
➢ The Kentledge consists mainly of concrete cubes that are 1 x 1 x 1m (2.5 ton) or 1 x 2
x 1m (5 ton) in size, steel girders and beams.
➢ Two rows of cubes will be placed to support the main girders where the steel beams
are then place on top of it.
➢ On top of the steel beams concrete cubes will be loaded then stacked.
➢ The total weight of the cubes and the beams will be equivalent to the axial loading
required.
➢ The clear distance from the edge of the test pile to the nearest part of the main girder
supporting the Kentledge stack in contact with the ground shall be greater than
1.3m.
➢ Movement regular checks (minimum one at every change of load) will be carried by
mean of level instrument based on a benchmark remote.
➢ Indicative sketches for the sake of illustration are attached in (Fig.– 1).

C. Equipment for Applying Load and Measurement

➢ The equipment used for applying load shall consist of hydraulic jacks with total
capacity of 1500 tones, will be fixed against the main girders to deliver the axial load
to the test pile & four nos. of dial gauges which measure the settlement.

D. Application of Test Load

➢ Main Contractor will give Engineer 24 hours’ notice before the commencement of any
test.
➢ The test load will be applied by hydraulically jacking against Kentledge load, the load
being measured by tested and certified pressure gauge.
➢ Testing will not commence until it is confirmed that there is no settlement of the
frame and Kentledge.

3
Static load test – Method Statement

➢ The pile settlement will be recorded by means of 4 dial gauges registering against a
reference beam, bearing on prepared flat surfaces fixed to the pile head and normal
to the pile axis.
➢ The support of reference beam shall be at least the greater of three test pile diameters
or 2 meter from the center of test pile.
➢ The dial gauges shall be placed equidistant from the pile axis and from each other.
➢ The dial gauges shall enable readings to be made to an accuracy of at least 0.1 mm.
➢ The hydraulic jacks, pump, hoses, pipes, couplings and other apparatus to be
operated under hydraulic pressure shall be capable of withdrawing a pressure of 1.5
times the maximum pressure used in the test without leaking.
➢ Other construction activities and persons who are not involved in the testing process
shall stay at a sufficient distance from the test to avoid disturbance to the measuring
apparatus.

E. Test Procedure

Proof Load Test Procedure for Non-working piles (Compression)

➢ The maximum load applied will be 2.0 times of working load for working piles. The
loading and un-loadings will be carried out in stages as shown in (Table-1).
➢ Application of an increment of load will be maintained for not less than the period
shown in the table below and until the rate of settlement is less than 0.25mm/hr and
decreasing.
➢ Results will be recorded at each stage on site reading report; copy is attached in
Table - 3).
➢ Upon completion of the test, results will be issued to the designer for verification.
