LESSON

PARENTHOOD
In a traditional Filipino family, the father is considered the head and the
provider of the family while the mother takes responsibility of the domestic needs
and become in charge of the emotional growth as well as values formation of the
children. They both perform different tasks and is treated differently by their
children. With this knowledge, we can state that parenthood:

 is the state of being a parent.

 means being a father or mother of the biological child.
 is a great responsibility or task.
 is not a role which can be successfully played on the basis of chance.
FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN THINKING OF PARENTHOOD
Parenthood is a status where responsible couples arrive at after making
decision to have a family, so here are the several factors when thinking parenthood:
1. happiness and stability of the marriage.

2. physical and emotional readiness of both partners for parenthood.

3. financial stability
WHAT DO WE MEAN BY RESPONSIBLE PARENTHOOD?
An important part of growing up is learning to make decisions about our lives.
Part of decision-making means taking responsibility for our own actions and
understanding that our decisions affect the lives of other people. In order to make
responsible decisions, a person needs accurate and reliable information.

 The will and ability to respond to the needs and aspiration of the family.
 The series of decisions couples make to ensure the best possible life for the
family and for the community.
 The ability of the parents to raise children in the Filipino way satisfies the
social, economic, and religious responsibilities of a family.
 The decision includes the process of deciding how to choose our partners,
when to form families, when to have the first child, child spacing, how many
children to have in all, etc.
PARENTING – also includes the inculcation of values and instilling of discipline.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF PARENTS

Children have special needs that often can be neglected if not carefully
planned. Beyond their need for appropriate nutrition, children also need support
and affection, mental stimulation, social involvement, and recreation. As the
parents they must know their duties and responsibilities to a child.
1. Provide physical care and love
The duty and responsibility of the parents start during the prenatal stage.
The physical, emotional, and mental condition of children depend on the
quality of prenatal care they received.

2. Inculcate discipline
Parents should be role models in inculcating discipline in their children.
Children should be trained to think and reason out for themselves and be
able to distinguish between right and wrong.

3. Develop social competence

Children should develop social competence in order to acquire the ability to
consider another’s perspective concerning a situation and learn from past
experiences.

4. Provide education
It is the duty of the parents to nurture their children’s education so that
they will acquire knowledge and develop skills habits that will guide the way
they think and feel.

5. Train children to become good citizens

Parents should serve as a role models in enhancing their children’s social
responsibility and commitment to contribute to the development of their
communities.

6. Teach children to be financially responsible

Parents should provide opportunities for their children to develop their
ability to manage money and other assets in a manner that is considered
productive and in the best interest of the individual or family.
7. Guide children to grow spiritually
Parents should provide their children opportunities to develop and grow
their whole person by focusing on their spiritual life.
