Something else of a mystery
– to me at least – is how the city’s
famous Crooked House still stands.
Also known as Sir John Boys House, it was
aptly described by Charles Dickens, in his novel
David Copperfield, as “leaning forward, trying to
see who was passing”. Built in the 17th century,
it now houses the bookshop run by Catching
Lives, a charity supporting people in the area
who are homeless or insecurely housed. Most of
its visitors simply stop to wonder at its precarious
angle (caused, incidentally, by an internal
chimney slipping out of place many years ago).

M25 and M20 to Kent, then the M2 and the A2 to
