ABSTRACT
Body mass index (BMI) is a value derived from the mass (weight) and height of a person.
The BMI is defined as the body mass divide by the square of the body height, and is
expressed in units of kg/m2, resulting from mass in kilograms and height in meters.
The BMI is a convenient rule of thumb used to broadly categorize a person as underweight,
normal weight, overweight, or obese based on tissue mass (muscle, fat, and bone) and
height.
This general correlation is particularly useful for consensus data regarding obesity or various
other conditions because it can be used to build a semi-accurate representation from which a
solution can be stipulated, or the RDA for a group can be calculated. Similarly, this is
becoming more and more pertinent to the growth of children, since most children are
sedentary.[34] Cross-sectional studies indicated that sedentary people can decrease BMI by
becoming more physically active. Smaller effects are seen in prospective cohort studies which
lend to support active mobility as a means to prevent a further increase in BMI.
INTRODUCTION
BMI is a measurement of a person's leanness or corpulence based on their height and weight,
and is intended to quantify tissue mass. It is widely used as a general indicator of whether a
person has a healthy body weight for their height. Specifically, the value obtained from the
calculation of BMI is used to categorize whether a person is underweight, normal weight,
overweight, or obese depending on what range the value falls between. These ranges of BMI
vary based on factors such as region and age, and are sometimes further divided into
subcategories such as severely underweight or very severely obese. Being overweight or
underweight can have significant health effects, so while BMI is an imperfect measure of
healthy body weight, it is a useful indicator of whether any additional testing or action is
required. Refer to the table below to see the different categories based on BMI that are used
by the calculator.
significantly improve our understanding of the strengths and limitations of the measuresused

define the characteristics of the populations required to develop an international reference
population, and
help specify the research agenda necessary to validate the definition of obesity that we have
proposed.
OBJECTIVE
Becoming overweight should be avoided by everyone. But for persons with disabilities
becoming overweight is a strict NO! Those extra kilos on your body can make you even more
disabled. Increased weight will not just hamper your mobility, but also it will cause problems
to your bones and muscles. And then those risks of diabetes, hypertension and stroke etc. are
also there to cause problems. You can always keep an eye on your weight by regularly using
a weighing machine. But how exactly would you know How would you know if you’re
overweight or obese? Well, Body Mass Index (BMI) is one of the globally accepted standards
of defining obesity. Today, we will know more about BMI
PURPOSE
The purpose of a BMI (Body Mass Index) calculator is to provide a numerical value that
indicates whether a person has a healthy body weight relative to their height. BMI is a widely
used method to estimate body fatness and assess the risk of weight-related health issues.
The primary purposes of a BMI calculator are:
Weight classification: The BMI calculator helps classify individuals into different weight
categories based on their BMI value. These categories typically include underweight, normal
weight, overweight, and obesity. By knowing their BMI, individuals can get an idea of
where they fall on the weight spectrum.
Health risk assessment: BMI is often used as a screening tool to assess the risk of certain
weight-related health problems, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes,
and certain types of cancer. Higher BMI values are generally associated with increased
health risks.
Health and fitness goal setting: For individuals seeking to improve their health and well-
being, a BMI calculator can be used as a starting point to set realistic weight goals. It
provides a baseline measurement that can be tracked over time to monitor progress.
Research and population studies: BMI calculators are used in research and population studies
to gather data on weight trends and evaluate the prevalence of obesity and related health
conditions in different populations. This information can inform public health policies and
interventions.
LITERARTURE SURVEY
The body mass index (BMI) is a method of assessing whether a person is a healthy weight in
relation to their height. Some experts call it the Queenlet index. Using the person'sheight and
weight, BMI indicates whether an individual is underweight, a healthy weight, overweight, or
obese. BMI has become the standard method for assessing body weight in many countries
across the world. However, there are some instances where using BMI may not be
appropriate or accurate. We explored these existing BMI calculator apps on Android
platforms to analyze their features, design, and user experience. This analysis helped us to
identify potential areas for improvement and unique features we may want to consider for our
own BMI calculator mini-project in Android Studio.
"BMI Calculator - Weight Loss" by Health Mate: This app not only calculates BMI but
also offers additional features related to weight loss and fitness. It includes a weight
tracker, personalized goals, and nutrition tips, providing a holistic approach to health
management.
"BMI Calculator & Weight Loss Tracker" by YAZ Applications: This app combines BMI
calculation with weight tracking functionality. Users can input their height, weight, age,
and gender to calculate BMI, and then track their progress over time. The app also
provides guidance on setting weight loss goals.
"Monitor Your Weight" by Husain Al-Bustan: This app focuses on weight tracking but
includes a BMI calculator as part of its features. It allows users to record their weight and
calculates BMI based on the entered data. The app also offers customizable charts and
graphs for visualizing weight and BMI trends.
EXISTING
There are several existing types of BMI calculator apps available on various platforms,
including Android. Here are a few examples:
"BMI Calculator" by Splend Apps: This app provides a simple and straightforward
interface for calculating BMI. It allows users to input their height and weight, and
then calculates and displays their BMI along with a corresponding category
(underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese).
PROPOSED
Input Fields: The app will have input fields where users can enter their height and weight
values.
BMI Calculation: The app will use the entered height and weight values to calculate the BMI
using the standard BMI formula: BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m))^2.
Result Display: The calculated BMI value will be displayed to the user, along with a
corresponding BMI category (e.g., underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese). The
app may use color-coded indicators or visual representations to highlight the BMI category.
Data Validation: The app will include validation checks to ensure that the entered height and
weight values are within acceptable ranges. It will display appropriate error messages if
The proposed BMI calculator mini-project aims to provide a practical tool for users to assess
their weight status conveniently. It will leverage Android Studio and relevant programming
concepts to develop an engaging and functional mobile application.

64-bit Microsoft® Windows® 8/10.
100 GB free disk space at minimum, 120 GB recommended.
4 Core CPU processor with minimum 1.6 GHz or x86_64 CPU architecture; 2nd generation
Intel Core or newer, or AMD CPU with support for a Windows Hypervisor.
Graphic Accelerators: NVidia or ATI with support of OpenGL 1.5 or higher.
Monitor: EGVGA Compatible.
Keyboard: Standard 101 key Keyboard.
USB Mouse.
Software requirements
In future we can add features where user can share their results which each other and then
comparing their results. Giving health advice or tips in scheduled manner depending on theuser
results. Providing best workout routine and food tips to be fit. And a feature where
theapplication shows gyms and fitness center near his/her neighborhood using Google maps
API.
Multi-Unit Support: Provide the option to input height and weight in various measurement
units, such as centimeters and kilograms, feet and pounds, etc. This will make the calculator
more versatile and user-friendly for people who are more comfortable with different unit
systems.
Age Consideration: Incorporate age as a factor in the BMI calculation. As individuals age,
their body composition and metabolic rates may change, and BMI might not be the most
accurate indicator of health. Adjusting the calculation to account for age can provide more
personalized results.
Body Composition Analysis: Instead of relying solely on height and weight, include
additional factors such as body fat percentage, muscle mass, and waist circumference to
provide a more comprehensive assessment of overall health. This could involve incorporating
advanced body composition measurement methods like bioelectrical impedance analysis or
dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.
Health Risk Assessment: Expand the calculator to provide information on associated health
risks based on the BMI results. This could include a breakdown of potential risks for
conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or hypertension, along with
recommendations for further evaluation or lifestyle changes.
Visualizations and Trends: Create visual representations of BMI ranges to help users better
understand where they fall on the spectrum. Additionally, allow users to track their BMI over
time and provide trend analysis, allowing them to see progress and changes in their health and
weight management efforts.
Mobile App Integration: Develop a mobile application that integrates the BMI calculator,
providing a seamless user experience. The app could include additional features like
reminders for regular measurements, personalized health recommendations, and access to a
database of nutritional information or exercise programs.
Integration with Wearable Devices: Sync the BMI calculator with wearable devices like
smartwatches or fitness trackers.
This would enable automatic data input from these devices, making the calculation process
more convenient and accurate. It could also provide real-time feedback and personalized
recommendations based on the user's activity levels.
CONCLUSION
The aim of this project is to demonstrate the working of BMI application. The mainpurpose of
this application is to calculate the Body mass index or BMI of a person. Body Mass Index
(BMI), which is a measure of body fat, calculated using a formula that requires the height and
the weight of an adult (either man or woman). Persons with a BMI of less than 18.5 are
underweight. A person is of normal weight if his or her BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9;
overweight if the BMI is between 25 and 29.9; and obese if it is 30 and above. This
application is helpful for the people who are interested in working out and improving their
health.
