UNITED INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY (UIU)

Dept. of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE)

Mid-Term Assignment 1, Trimester: Summer, Year: 2024
Course: EEE 2101, Title: Electronics I
Full Marks: 10

1. [2.5]

Figure 1

Use piecewise linear model to find ID1, ID2, I and V shown in Figure 1. For diode D 1, use
VD0 = 0.67V and rD = 20 ohms. For diode D2, use VD0 = 0.68V and rD = 10 ohms.

2. A voltage regulator has been developed where a series combination of diodes is used to
provide a constant voltage of about 12 volts. The diodes are identical and specifications
of the diodes are given as follows – [2.5]

VZ = 6 volts and rZ = 30 ohms. Iz (max) = 100 mA and Iz (min) = 1 mA

Using the piecewise-linear model for the diodes answer the following:

a) Calculate the output voltage with no load (𝑣0 no load) and with source voltage (Vs ) at its
nominal value (20 V).

b) Calculate the output voltage (V0) if there is a 10% increase in the power supply
voltage. What is the percentage change in the regulated voltage (Δ𝑣0 / 𝑣0 no load) in this
case?

c) Fig. 2b shows the regulator circuit with load 𝑅L connected. What is the maximum
value of the load current (i.e. minimum value of the load resistance, 𝑅L) for which the
Zener diode still operates in the breakdown region?

3.
constant voltage drop model for diode with VD = 0.6 V.
A full-bridge rectifier circuit is shown in Fig. 3. Answer the following questions. Use
[2.5]

a) Depending on the conduction modes (‘on’ or ‘off”) of 𝐷1 and 𝐷2 how many states
can this circuit have? Draw circuit diagram for each state.

b) Write the equations relating input (Vin) and output (Vout) of the circuit.

c) Sketch the transfer characteristics (Vout versus Vin).

You must: • Draw the axes using ruler. Clearly mention essential voltage values.
• Label the axis variables along with units.

d) If VI = 10 sin 120𝜋𝑡, sketch the input and output waveforms (VS vs. 𝑡 and Vout vs. t)

You must: • Draw the axes with ruler. Label the axes properly.
• Clearly mention the maximum/minimum voltage values of both graphs.

e) Find the max forward current through the resistor and peak inverse voltage through
the diodes

4. a) A particular diode displays a forward voltage of 0.7 V at a current of 1.4 mA

and 0.9 V at 14 mA. Consider room temperature (300 K). [2.5]

i) Find the value of the ideality factor (𝑛).

ii) Find the value of the reverse saturation current (𝐼S).
iii) What is the value of the forward voltage when the diode current is 70 mA?

Useful expression: 𝐼D = 𝐼S [exp (𝑉D /𝑛𝑉T) − 1]

b) Jesse Pinkman is trying to produce a curious circuit in which, if any input signal above
1.4 V is provided, the output is 1.4 volts. If any input signal below -1.4 volts is provided,
the output is -1.4 volts. Help Jesse design the circuit. Use silicon diodes and model them
each having a constant voltage drop of 0.7 volts while active. Draw the circuit
mentioning appropriate element values, and point out Vin and Vout. Also, sketch
the transfer characteristics of the circuit.
