2. Briefly exlain how the following information systems are used in organizations and what
level they serve within the organization.

i. Decision Support Systems [2 Marks

Purpose: Used for making complex decisions and problem solving by analyzing data. These
systems include tools for data analysis,modelling and simulation

Level: Primarily serves middle management.

ii. Executive support systems [2 Marks]

Purpose: Provides high-level reports for strategic decision-making. Designed to be user friendly
providing summarized information often through dashboards and visualizations

Level: Serves top-level management.

iii. Knowledge work support system [2 Marks]

Purpose: Assists professionals in creating and managing knowledge. They support knowledge
workers by providing tools for document management, collaboration and information retrieval

Level: Serves knowledge workers and specialized professionals.

iv. Management information system[2 Marks]

Purpose: Provides reports and summaries of routine operations. They help in monitoring
controlling, decision making and administrative activities

Level: Serves operational and middle management.

3.The information system manager of ABE ltd has recommended installation of computer
network in the company's new offices. The management of the company is not yet
convinced on the benefits of the computer network. Advise the management on six benefits
to be derived from installing the network

 Improved Communication: Enhances communication within and outside the
organization.

 Resource Sharing: Allows sharing of hardware, software, and data resources.

 Cost Efficiency: Reduces the cost of purchasing and maintaining multiple resources.

 Centralized Data Management: Facilitates easy data management and access control.

4. A manager under competitive pressure is considering a new application of IS that will


displace 5 employees. The employees will not be able to find similar jobs elsewhere with
their current skills.

i.. Advise the organization on whether to proceed or withdraw the plan [3 Marks]

Recommendation: Proceed with caution, considering both operational benefits and potential
employee impacts.

ii.Where the organization opts to proceed with the project, give two ethical measures the
organization can undertake to mitigate on the negative impact on the employees lives.

Ethical Measures:

Retraining Programs: Offer skill training programs to help displaced employees find other roles.

Compensation Packages: Provide severance packages to support the employees during the
transition.

Job placement assistance; partners with job placement agencies to help the displaced
employees find new employment opportunities

5. Prototyping is gaining popularity as an alternative software development strategy.


Define what is meant by prototyping and discuss its various advantages and
disadvantages. (4marks)

Prototyping in Software Development

Definition: Prototyping is an iterative process where a working model of a system is built to


understand requirements better before full-scale development.

Advantages:

Allows for early feedback and adjustment.


Reduces risk of misunderstandings in requirements.

Disadvantages:

Can lead to scope creep due to continuous changes.

May lead to higher development costs if not controlled.

6.Many organizations are taking up development of management information systems (MIS) to


cope with the changing business environment
Required:
(i) Analyze four forces that could drive an organization towards implementing
management information systems (MIS). (2 marks)

 Competitive Pressure: Need to stay competitive.

 Technological Advancements: Necessity to adopt emerging tech.

 Operational Efficiency: Drive to streamline operations.

 Customer Expectations: Requirement to meet growing customer demands.

(ii) Evaluate four barriers towards implementation of MIS in an organization

 Cost Constraints: High initial and maintenance costs.

 Resistance to Change: Employee reluctance to adopt new systems.

 Lack of Skilled Personnel: Shortage of expertise in MIS.

 Data Security Concerns: Risks related to data security and privacy.
