Task Name: Assignment 1 - Recording Ambience and SFX (Soundscapes)

Learning Outcomes:
Students will learn how to Record location Ambiences and EFX using a Field Recorder and process of
handling the shotgun mics to achieve an excellent sound quality.

Task Brief:

Using the available Field Recorder and Shotgun Mic, Record the following Ambiences and EFX
individually.

Assignment can be executed as a group of 3 students :


A: Sound Recordist
B: Boom Operator
C: Photographer (to Document the student A & B recording every asset)

Students can rotate the roles for every recording such that all three will get to operate the roles A &
B.

List of Tasks:

Task 1: Sound Recording


● Record natural ambience:
○ Chirping birds, Rustling leaves (Any 1 or Mix)
○ Morning 6 am ambience (Compulsory)
● Record urban ambience:
○ Bustling city, Traffic noise, People chatting, Street vendors, Kids playing (All Mix)
● Record industrial ambience:
○ Machinery, Construction work, Factory noises (Any 1)
● Record domestic ambience:
○ Household activities, Kitchen sounds (Mix)
○ Office ambience (Compulsory)
● Record isolated sounds:
○ Door/temple/cycle bell (any 1)
○ Car or bike passing (Compulsory)
○ Footsteps on concrete using sandals/slippers/shoes (all)
○ Coffee machine whirring / ceiling fan (any one)
○ Pressure cooker/elevator/frying pan (any one)

Task 2: Sound Identification and Documentation


● Accurately identify each recorded sound.
● Document the recording process with photographs.
● Once you start the Recording, announce the name of the Recordist and Boom Operator.
Copying ambiences/EFX from stock libraries is strictly not allowed

Task 3: Audio Post-Production


● Clean up individual tracks as needed. (maintain recordist + boom operator name
announcement.)
● Name final edit exports neatly & arrange
● Export each sound type as a separate .Wav file

Submission Guidelines/Deliverables:
● Submit all audio files along with a documentation, with clearly labelled assets individually to
Educloud.
● Documentation to contain on location photograph featuring recording/boom operator with
insights into recording and editing process with any challenges.
● Recording config should be 16 bit, 48 KHz.
● Individual submission is based on assets captured as a recordist.
● Use the file naming convention: Assignment Name_Student Name_Date.
● Students will be evaluated for their individual effort for their role of Sound Recordist.
