Promising Future
Hamza Arsiwala, Immediate Past President (then

highlighted how power plays a crucial role in
infrastructure. “The demand for power has surged
by 80 percent in the past decade, and per capita
consumption has risen from 1,200 kWh to nearly
1,550 kWh today. This growth highlights the critical
need for e cient energy solutions and a focused
approach towards renewable energy, storage
solutions, and green hydrogen,” he said. He
highlighted that the Indian electrical and electronics
sector has grown steadily, reaching a total market
size of US$ 70 billion with exports standing at
US$ 12 billion. He added, “As we work towards a
cleaner energy future, investments in the power
sector are pivotal. In the past five to six years, HAMZA ARSIWALA

renewable energy (RE) journey, with the country’s
total RE capacity crossing the 200-gigawatt (GW)
mark as on October 10, 2024. According to the
Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the total RE-based
electricity generation capacity now stands at

Chairman & Managing Director, Shri RK Tyagi,
POWERGRID has actively enabled the integration of
renewable energy (RE) into the national grid – a key
step in our journey towards a sustainable energy future.
A leader who has been instrumental in shaping
India’s power sector, Shri Tyagi has handled various
power grid businesses most effectively. Notably,
POWERGRID transmits more than 45 percent of the
country’s power. It has a network of more than
175,000 odd circuit km with over 270 substations
and a transformation capacity of more than
495,000 megavolt ampere (MVA). At the recently
held Industry Conclave by IEEMA in New Delhi, Shri
Tyagi spoke to a power-packed house of
audience on strengthening transmission
infrastructure.

4.1 Both-end Bonding: Both ends of the cable sheath
are connected to the system earth.

Advantage:
• With this method, no induced voltages occur at
the cable ends, making it most safe and secure.

4.2 Single-end Bonding

The sending end of the cable sheath is connected to the system Earth. The other end is open, thus standing
voltage will appear, which is induced linearly along the cable length. To ensure safety requirements, the open-
end of the cable sheath must be protected with surge arrester (SVL).
SVL is basically a metal oxide varistor (MOV) surge arrester that deflects switching and atmospheric
surges but must not trigger in short circuits.

Earth points have to be connected additionally
with an earth continuity cable.
• To avoid or minimise different earth potentials at
both ends of the cable.
• To ensure correct operation of SVLs.

Requirements
• The ability to carry the single-phase short circuit
current.
• Must be placed in an induction-free manner
to avoid difference in potential or circulating
currents.

Best Practices for

Underground Power Cables
IEEMA conducted a two-days workshop on ‘Best Practices for
Underground Power Cables – from Design to Manufacutring to Testing,

A group picture…

U
nderground power cables play a vital role in
reliability of power systems. Design and
construction play a key role in power cables,
but equally important are good cable laying, jointing,
and termination practices. Such good practices and
good design of accessories only improve the quality
of life of a cable.
With this objective, IEEMA organised a two-days
training workshop on the subject ‘Best Practices for
Underground Power Cables – from Design to
Manufacutring to Testing, Laying and Accessories’
on September 24-25, 2024, in Mumbai. It was
supported by Polycab India Limited.
S Rama Prasath, Former Joint Director,
Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), Bangalore,
having more than 35 years of experience in this
domain, conducted the workshop as the faculty.
The workshop focused on all aspects of cables
– from designing to manufacturing to testing, design
of accessories, laying practices, fault location, and
condition monitoring of cables.
Training modules were conducted under eight Sonal Gariba, IEEMA Cables Division Chairperson, sharing her
sessions over two days through power point thoughts on the need for conducting such workshops
