The teacher will present short selection to the class. After reading the selection, they
will answer the questions provided at the end of the selection.
Due to the pandemic caused by CoVid-19, many families were affected. National
government sets health standards and protocols. Some Local Chief Executives
implemented lockdown in their respective places wherein only head of the family
permitted to go outside to buy foods and other necessities.
Jane, an 11-year-old girl and a grade 4 pupil of Patabog Elementary School think of
something to avoid her boredom. She decided to build mini-garden at their yard and
asked help from her family members. Her father bought her three rectangular plots
from the flower shop near in their house.
Jane wanted to use loam soil for the first plot, clay soil for the second and sandy soil for
the last plot. She decided to do experiment at the same time. She was looking for the

best type of soil for her plants. Her three rectangular plots are in different sizes. Her
problem is, how much of loam soil, clay soil, and sandy soil she needed to fill up each
plot?
Ask:
Who is the main character in the story?
What kind of activity Jane decided to do?
What caused her to do planting?
Who bought rectangular plots for Jane?
How may rectangular plots have brought for Jane?
What kind of soil she wanted to use for her plants?
Integration: There are four types of soil namely loam soil, clay soil, sandy soil and
the last one is silt soil. (from Madhav University)
Why she wanted to use it?
What is her problem regarding the materials she will use for planting?
The teacher will test the prior knowledge of the pupils on the KSA.
The learner will bring 1 box and crumpled circle-shaped pieces of paper to be
used in the first activity.
A. Visualize the volume of your box. Then, find the actual number of objects used in your box.
Write your answers in your notebook.
B. Count the total number of cubes in each solid figure. Write your answer in your notebook.
C. Multiply the given measurement of the solid figure below to find its volume.
In the solid figure above, if the length is 6 cm, the width is 3 cm, and the height is 4 cm,
what is the volume?_______________

Joel, older brother of Jane wanted to find the volume of the three rectangular plots using
three different ways. It is also his way of helping her younger sister in solving her problem.
FIRST PLOT
Joel filled the first plot with crumpled circle-shaped papers.
SECOND PLOT
Joel put small cubes inside the second plot.
THIRD PLOT
Lastly, Joel measured the third rectangular plot. It is 20 cm long, 5 cm wide and 10 cm
high.

ASK:
1. Based on the situation, did Joel get the same number of units for the volume of the first
plot?
2. How many cubes Joel used to fill up the second plot?
3. How do you find the volume of the third plot measured by Joel?
What is it?
The teacher will present the concept on how to get the volume of rectangular prism.
Now let’s go back to the situation of Joel, did they get the same number of units for the
volume of the first plot? Why?
The answer is no. It is because Joel used non-standard units in measuring volume of a
solid figure. Non-standard units do not give the same measure of volume for the same
container.
When non-standard unit used is small, more units are needed to fill a container. When
the non-standard unit used is bigger, fewer units are needed to fill the container (Tabilang et.
al., 2015, p. 300). So, more caps are needed than the number of crumpled papers to fill in the
box.

Aside from using non-standard units in measuring volume of a solid figure, you can also
use the standard units. Now, we will visualize the volume of the box using standard units.
Let’s find out how Joel measured the volume of the box using cubes.
To find the volume of the second plot, count the number of cubes Joel put inside the
plot. It has N cubes, so, the volume is N cubic centimeter or N cm3.
Let us study the following figures. You can count the cubes to find the volume of a box.
The volume of the box above is 4 cubic units. If 1 cubic unit is equal to 1 cubic cm, then,
the volume is 4 cubic cm or 4 cm³. A cubic centimeter (cm³) is a standard unit for measuring
volume. A cubic meter (m³) is another one. (Tabilang et. al., 2015, p. 229)
Then, how did Joel measure the volume of the third plot? The plot is in the shape of a
rectangular prism. It is a solid figure that has six faces, twelve edges and eight vertices. Vertex
(vertices in plural form) is the corner of a shape. Edge is a segment where two faces of a prism
meet. Some rectangular prisms have faces that are shaped like rectangles and squares.

If the length of the sides of rectangular prism are given, we can use the formula in
finding the volume.
Let V be the volume of the rectangular prism. If l is the length, w is the width, and h is
the height of the rectangular prism, then we have:
V=l×w×h

V=l×w×h
V = 20 cm x 5 cm x 10 cm
V = 1,000 cubic centimeter or 1,000 cm3
Therefore, the volume of the third rectangular plot Joel measured is 1,000 cubic units
or 1,000 cubic centimeter (1,000 cm³).
The learner can do independent study to get the exact amount of soil Jane needed
for her three rectangular plots using the concept learned from the lesson.
C. Engagement Activity
1. Individual Activity
Read and answer each problem.
1. Use a non-standard unit, which container will give the greater number of
volume? Visualize the volume and explain your answer. Encircle the box with
greater volume and box the smaller one. (One of the pupils will do the
demonstration in front)
