1.

Suppose that against a certain opponent the number of points the MIT basketball
team scores is normally distributed with unknown mean u and variance 25.
Suppose that over the course of the last 10 games between the two teams MIT
scored the following points: 59, 62, 59, 74, 70, 61, 62, 66, 62, 75. Compute a
95% confidence interval for u.

Ans: [61.901, 68.099]

2. The volume in a set of wine bottles is known to follow a N(u, 25) distribution.
You take a sample of the bottles and measure their volumes. How many bottles
do you have to sample to have a 95% confidence interval for u with length 1?

Ans: n=384

3. A random sample of 49 measurements was selected from a population with

unknown mean u and known standard deviation 28. Calculate a a 95%
confidence interval for u.

Ans: [20, 36]

4. Twelve successive train times (in minutes) between the same two British cities
were recorded as follows 63.5, 78.9, 65.7, 61.2, 76.8, 72.5, 77.1, 81.2, 64.9, 71.3,
73.4, 75.8. Assume that these observations form a random sample from a normal
distribution with standard deviation 6. Calculate a 95% confidence interval for
the mean time taken by the trains between the two cities. Give your answer to 1
decimal place.

Ans: [68.5 min, 75.3 min]

5. The weights in kilograms of ten pheasants brought to a market in one day by

local gamekeepers are given as follows 1.25, 1.38, 0.95, 1.68, 1.50, 1.62, 1.39,
1.05, 1.43, 1.38.
(a) Assuming that this is a random sample from a normal distribution with
mean u and standard deviation 0.2 calculate a 90% confidence interval for u .

(b) How many observations would be required in order to halve the length of
this confidence interval?

Ans: (a) [1.26 kg, 1.47 kg], (b) n=40
