1. Find the head H in the shown tank required to derive water flow of 0.314 m 3/s
through the two pipes shown in series. The pipes were made of cast iron. ν water=
10-6 m2/s – Neglect minor losses.

L1=100 m
L2=80 m

D1 = 14 cm
D1 = 28 cm

2. Determine the head loss through a pipe has 1 km length and 30 cm diameter to
derive water flow of 0.3 m3/s. The pipe has four elbows, one filter, and one valve.
Determine also the power of the pump required to overcome the head losses,
Take the efficiency of the pump equal 70%.

Kelbow = 0.7, kfilter = 7, kvalve = 5, ε = 0.1 mm, νwater= 10-6 m2/s.

3. A pipeline is designed to transfer Gasoline (S =0.84, kinematic viscosity of

15*10-6 m2/s) at flow rate of 113 m3/hr. The pipe diameter is 250 mm and length
of 18 km. The pipeline contains 20 elbows and 18 ball valves. Calculate the head
losses in such pipeline. Take into consideration that: Pipe roughness Ɛ=0.2 mm;
Kelbow is 0.3; Kvalve is 1.2.

4. Water at 10 oC ( = 999.7 kg/m3 and μ = 1.307 × 10-3 kg/m·s) flows from a large
reservoir to a smaller one through a 5 cm diameter cast iron piping system, as
shown in following figure. Determine the elevation (z1) for a flow rate of 6 L/s.

5. An oil (S=0.82) is pumped between 2 storage tanks in a pipe with the following
characteristics L=2440 m, D=20 cm, f=0.02 and Σk=12.5. Oil level in upper tank
is 31 m above that in lower tank. Use the following pump data evaluate the oil
discharge and the power required for the pump.
