Automotive Saftey

By Joe Bozic
Introduction
In this presentation we will discuss Automotive Safety and what happens when
you don’t drive with care. In just 2017 alone, 17,321 Pennsylvania teenagers were
in a car accident and roughly 14.5% of those crashes resulted in the death of the
teen driver.
DUI
Driving Under the Influence (DUI) is a major cause of car crashes even in teens. A
total of ¼ of fatal car accidents that involve teenagers have been linked to
underage drinking and driving. 8.2% of high school students reported that they
had drove under the influence one or more times. If you are not 21, do not drink at
all and especially don’t drink and drive.
Distracted driving
Distracted driving is a very serious issue. 32.8% of high schoolers nationwide
have admitted to texting/ emailing while driving. Talking on the phone while driving
can double the likelihood of an accident and slow the teens reaction time to that of
a 70 year old. 12% of all distracted drivers involved in a fatal car accident, were
from the ages 15-19. This shows that texting and driving is extremely dangerous
and should be avoided by all drivers but especially teenagers.
Conclusion
When teenagers get into vehicles, they need to be aware of the risks that it
involves. There are drivers that make very poor decisions, and if you are one of
those drivers, you need to think about what you’re doing. Even if you aren’t one of
those drivers, be very intentional about being safe when around those kind of
drivers so that you can stay safe as well. Drive safely please.
