Sample Problems.
1. The submerged, curved surface AB in figure is a quarter of a circle of radius 4
ft. The tank’s length (distance perpendicular to paper) is 6 ft. Find the
horizontal and vertical components of the total resultant force acting on the
curved surface and their locations.
Solution:
For the horizontal resultant force:
𝐹1 = 8(62.4)(4)(6)
𝐹1 = 11980.8 𝑙𝑏
1
𝐹2 = (4)(62.4)(4)(6)
2
𝐹2 = 2995.2 𝑙𝑏
𝐹𝐻 = 14976 𝑙𝑏
For the location of the horizontal component:
2
14976 ℎ𝑝 = 11980.8 10 + 2995.2 8 + 4
3
ℎ𝑝 = 10.13 𝑓𝑡
Solution (other):
For the horizontal resultant force:
ത
𝐹𝐻 = 𝛾ℎ𝐴
𝐹𝐻 = 62.4(10)(4)(6)
𝐹𝐻 = 14976 𝑙𝑏
ℎ𝑝 = 10.13 𝑓𝑡
Solution:
For the vertical resultant force:
𝐹𝑉 = 𝛾𝑉
1
𝐹𝑉 = 62.4 8 4 + 𝜋 4 2 (6)
4
𝐹𝑉 = 16685.65 𝑙𝑏
For the location of the vertical component:
16685.65 𝑥 = 14976 10.13 − 8
𝑥 = 1.91 𝑓𝑡
When the water is on the other side,
the values are the same, just
opposite in direction.

2. The submerged sector gate AB shown is one-sixth of a circle of radius 6 m.
The length of the gate is 10 m. Determine the amount and location of the
horizontal and vertical components of the total resultant force acting on the
gate.
Solution:
For the horizontal resultant force:
ത
𝐹𝐻 = 𝛾ℎ𝐴
9.81 sin 60 6
𝐹𝐻 = sin 60 6 10
2
𝐹𝐻 = 1324.35 𝑘𝑁
