CIVIL SERVICES EXAMINATION (MAINS) 2021

PHYSICS TEST & DISCUSSION SERIES

Test V: Mechanics
Time Allowed: 3 Hours Max Marks: 250
Question number 1 & 5 are compulsory . Attempt any three other questions .
Q1 (a) Show that in case of an elastic and glancing collision between two particles of masses
𝑚1 and 𝑚2 the maximum value of scattering angle 𝜃1 in the lab frame corresponds to scattering
𝑚
angle in C M frame 𝜃, where 𝜃 = 𝐶𝑜𝑠 −1 (− 𝑚2 ). Also show that maximum value of
1
−1⁄
𝑚12 2
𝜃1 = 𝑇𝑎𝑛−1 [ 2 − 1]
𝑚2
(b) A Particle moves in a circular orbit under the action of a force f (r) = - k / 𝑟 2 . If k is suddenly
reduced to half its original value, show that the particle would move along a parabola.

3𝐶
(c) A particle of rest mass 𝑚𝑜 and velocity 5 collides with other particle of rest mass 𝑚𝑜 at rest
and coalesce together. What is the velocity and rest mass of the combined particle.

(d) What is the need for multi stage rockets? If the maximum exhaust velocity of a rocket is 2
𝑀
km/sec. Calculate the rates 𝑀𝑜 for it, if it is to attain escape velocity of 11.2 km/sec.

(e) Determine the speed of an electron of energy 1.3 MeV and derive 𝑝𝜇2 = −𝑚𝑜2 𝐶 2 , where all
terms have their usual meaning. ( 10 × 5 = 50 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑠 )

Q2 (a) At what speed will the relativistic value for length differ from the classical value by 10%?

(b) The sun radiates energy at the rate of 4 × 1026 Joule per second. Calculate the rate at which
its mass is decreasing.

(c) Derive expression for the potential and field due to a solid sphere of uniform density at an (i)
internal (ii) external point.

(d) Show that total kinetic energy of a system of particles about any point equals the K. E of the
centre of mass plus the K.E of motion about centre of mass. ( 10 + 10 + 15 + 15 = 50 Marks )

Q3 (a) Find the law of force for a particle moving in 𝑟 𝑛 = 𝑎𝑛 𝐶𝑜𝑠 𝑛𝜃

(b) A capillary tube of radius a and length l is fitted horizontally at the bottom of a cylindrical
flask of cross-section A. Initially, there is water in the flask up to a height ℎ1 . What time would
be required for the height to reduce to ℎ2 , if η be the viscosity of water.

(c) Derive an expression for equation of motion of a particle in rotating frame of reference.
Explain the term Coriolis force and explain why does a stone falling freely deviates eastward in
northern hemisphere. (15 + 15 + 20 = 50 Marks)

Q4 (a) Derive Rutherford scattering formula and interpret the result. Why total cross-section in
this case turns out to be infinite.

(b) Defining all terms derive 𝑌 = 2𝜂(1 + 𝜎)

(c) A capillary of diameter 2 mm and length 20 cm is connected to a tank of water and 0.2 cc of
water flows out per second. What will be the rate of flow of water if another capillary of length
10 cm & diameter 1mm is joined in series. ( 25 + 10 + 15 = 50 marks)

Q5 (a) Show that the length of the semi-major axis of the elliptic orbit of a planet depends on its
total energy but is independent of its angular momentum.

(b) A Foucault’s pendulum of length 20 m is suspended on the rotating earth at a latitude of 300 .
Show that the period of its oscillations is 8.98 s and that the period of precession is 48 h.

(c) Show that the potential of a circular disc of uniform surface density σ and radius ‘a’ at a
point on its circumference is 4 Ga σ

(d) A Sphere of radius 2r and density d has a spherical cavity of radius r. The diameter of the
cavity coincides with a radius of the sphere. Find the moment of inertia of the body about an axis
perpendicular to the common diameter of the sphere and the cavity and passing through the
center of the cavity.

(e) Show that dx dy dƶ dt is Lorentz invariant. ( 10 × 5 = 50 Marks )

Q6 (a) A rigid body symmetric about an axis has one point fixed on its axis. Discuss the
rotational motion of the body when there is no other force acting except the reaction force at a
fixed point.

(b) If a Particle describes an ellipse orbit about a focus, prove that the velocity at the end of the
minor axis is a geometric mean between the velocities at the ends of any diameter.

(c) A shell lying in a straight smooth horizontal tube suddenly breaks into two portions 𝑚1 . And
𝑚2 . If d is the distance apart, in the tube, of the masses after time t, show that the work done by
