6 Inverse Functions

𝑓 (𝑥 ) → 𝑓 −1 (𝑥)

• The domain of 𝑓 −1 (𝑥 ) = The range of 𝑓(𝑥 )

• The range of 𝑓 −1 (𝑥 ) = The domain of 𝑓(𝑥)
• Not all functions has an inverse.
• An inverse function 𝑓 −1 (𝑥) can only exist if and only if the
function 𝑓(𝑥) is a one-one mapping.

Example 1:
Find the inverse of this function:
𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 5𝑥 − 2

𝒍𝒆𝒕 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒚;
𝑦 = 5𝑥 − 2
𝑦 + 2 = 5𝑥
𝑦+2
𝑥=
5
𝑥+2
𝑓 −1 (𝑥 ) =
5
Example 2:
𝑓 (𝑥 ) = √𝑥 + 1 − 5 for 𝑥 ≥ −1

(a) Find an expression for 𝑓 −1 (𝑥 ).

𝑙𝑒𝑡 𝑓(𝑥 ) = 𝑦;
𝑦 = √𝑥 + 1 − 5
𝑦 + 5 = √𝑥 + 1
(𝑦 + 5)2 = 𝑥 + 1
𝑥 = (𝑦 + 5)2 − 1
𝑓 −1 (𝑥 ) = (𝑥 + 5)2 − 1

(b) Solve the equation 𝑓 −1 (𝑥 ) = 𝑓(35)

𝑓 −1 (𝑥 ) = 𝑓(35)
(𝑥 + 5)2 − 1 = √35 + 1 − 5
(𝑥 + 5)2 − 1 = 1
(𝑥 + 5)2 = 1 + 1
𝑥 + 5 = ±√2
𝑥 = ±√2 − 5
𝑥1 = √2 − 5 𝑜𝑟 𝑥2 = −√2 − 5

𝑓(𝑥) = √𝑥 + 1 − 5
𝑅𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 → 𝑓(𝑥 ) ≥ −5 → 𝐷𝑜𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛 𝑓 −1 (𝑥 ) ≥ −5

Question 7
(a)
𝑓 (𝑥 ) = (𝑥 − 4)2 + 5

𝑙𝑒𝑡 𝑓(𝑥 ) = 𝑦;
𝑦 = (𝑥 − 4)2 + 5
𝑦 − 5 = (𝑥 − 4)2
√𝑦 − 5 = 𝑥 − 4
𝑥 = √𝑦 − 5 + 4
𝑓 −1 (𝑥 ) = √𝑥 − 5 + 4

(b) Solve 𝑓 −1 (𝑥 ) = 𝑓(0)

𝑓 −1 (𝑥 ) = 𝑓(0)
√𝑥 − 5 + 4 = (0 − 4)2 + 5
√𝑥 − 5 + 4 = 21
√𝑥 − 5 = 21 − 4
𝑥 − 5 = 172
𝑥 = 172 + 5
𝑥 = 294

2𝑦 = 𝑥 − 3
𝑥 = 2𝑦 + 3
𝑔−1 (𝑥 ) = 2𝑥 + 3

𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑔−1 (𝑥 )
2𝑥 + 8
= 2𝑥 + 3
𝑥−2
2𝑥 + 8 = (2𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 − 2)
2𝑥 + 8 = 2𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 3𝑥 − 6
2𝑥 2 − 𝑥 − 6 − 2𝑥 − 8 = 0
2𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 − 14 = 0
(2𝑥 − 7)(𝑥 + 2) = 0
2𝑥 − 7 = 0 𝑥 + 2 = 0
