School Counselor

Job Description

Reports To: Director of Student Services (or designee)


FLSA Status: Exempt
School Classification: Certificated
Pay Schedule: Range 11
Work Schedule: 190 days/11 months
Location: Onsite and Remote Office

Position Summary: The school counselor oversees the school counseling program with the goal of creating
curriculum and practices while providing direct and indirect counseling services to students in need.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary Focus
1. Supports the growth and development of the department through a high level of
collaboration with all members of the department team and through a high level of focus on
the needs of the individual department
2. Develops and executes plans in collaboration with the assistant director of the department in
order to meet the department’s mission and vision
3. Stays mindful of the larger needs of the school when making recommendations to the
assistant director and sustains the department through a high level of support
4. Plans, organizes, and directs the work of others within the department as assigned
5. Conducts research on educational laws and trends that pertain to the department as needed

Develops Department and School


1. Notices department needs and shares those needs along with creative solutions with the
assistant director (or director, if applicable)
2. Executes a plan with the assistant director of the department in order to meet department
goals
3. Collaborates with the assistant director on developing the regional agenda for the department
with an effort to tie content to the department goal
4. Responds to questions in the compilation using a constructive, supportive, and positive tone
5. Maintains department manual and calendar with all department processes and protocols and
ensures it is accurate, up to date, and continually referenced and used
6. Serves as a member of the panel for department positions and other positions as needed
7. Supports in the creation of Sage University

Stakeholder Engagement
1. Assists with presentations for the board, authorizer, and other stakeholders as needed;
Attends and presents at meetings as needed

2. Reviews WASC document in relation to department to ensure accuracy, thoroughness, proper
grammar, clear writing, and conciseness
3. Leads WASC committee as needed

Direct Counseling Services


1. Assesses student data to develop an action plan for direct services
2. Creates a direct service program which includes one-on-one and group counseling
opportunities
3. Conducts virtual direct counseling services
4. Analyzes the effectiveness of direct counseling services offered and make adjustments as
needed
5. Conducts suicide risk assessments for students as needed
6. Services students during normal business hours unless prior approval has been extended by
supervisor

Indirect Counseling Services


1. Assesses student data to develop an action plan for indirect services
2. Identifies community resources and referrals for indirect services
3. Makes suggestions as needed to additional services
4. Has an ongoing understanding the scope of the school’s services and making referral
suggestions as appropriate
5. Analyzes the effectiveness of indirect counseling offered and make adjustments as needed

Management and Accountability


1. Identifies student counseling needs through data collection in conjunction with assistant
director of student services/MTSS or designee
2. Creates school counseling plan based on identified student needs
3. Attends professional development based on identified student needs
4. Sets attainable goals to develop school counseling department
5. Consults and collaborates with students, teachers, parents, community resources/
organizations
6. Documents all correspondence and keeps a record of relevant data

Academic, College, and Career Guidance


1. Collaborates with the high school principal to determine the guidance needs of the
department.
2. Oversees academic parameters for high school matriculation, Common Core Standards, and
UC and CSU entrance processes and requirements
3. Disseminates educational and vocational information
4. Oversees the development, implementation, and supervision of systems and procedures for
disseminating information regarding college and other training institutions, including entrance
requirements, program offerings, scholarships and financial aid
5. Conducts enrollment meetings with students to review transcripts and course plan and
proposes course schedules

Other Duties:
1. Responds to all school related written correspondence, phone calls, voicemails, and emails
within 24 business hours
2. Documents and refers to the school’s management all formal disciplinary actions involving
students; supporting management with addressing and resolving complaints from students
and parents in a timely manner; ensuring compliance with the provisions of California Penal
Code Section 11166 (Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act)
3. Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education & Experience:


1. A valid, current, and appropriate California state pupil personnel services credential. A copy of
credential to be provided and kept current.
2. Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) preferred
3. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) preferred

Other Qualifications:
1. State and federal fingerprint clearance (LiveScan) to work with students (Ed. Code 44237). No
prospective employee can report to work without this clearance being received and Human
Resources notifying the immediate supervisor of this clearance.
2. Proof of a clear TB Tine test or signed Certificate of Completion dated within the last 60 days
(Ed. Code 49406) upon employment and thereafter updated every four years
3. The employee is expected to acquire and maintain a working computer with an internet
connection and a printer.
4. Hold and maintain a valid California Driver’s License; proof of automobile insurance; and full
time use of a dependable automobile that is insured pursuant to California regulations.

Knowledge:
1. Computer and technology literacy:
a. Operate office equipment including a calculator, copier, fax machine, computer and
assigned software.
b. Google docs, Google spreadsheets and other online collaboration tools to send and
receive information
2. Basic arithmetic calculations

Skills:
1. Conflict resolution
2. Record-keeping techniques
