MECH 203: MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DESIGN TOOLS

FALL 2024

TUTORIAL: Animation
DATE: November 25, 2024

NAME:

Ryan Purdy

Report 8
This tutorial demonstrates two methods of animation in SolidWorks: by graphical positioning and
by precise positioning. In the first section, we animate the plunger model by changing the position and
state of its components at different points in time. SolidWorks then interpolates between these key events
to create an animation. In this first motion study, we change the orientation and visibility of the plunger
arm, the color of the base, and the display type of the plunger at different points in time. Finally, we
export the animation as a movie and close the part.

In the second half of this tutorial, we focus on animation by precise positioning. We move the
collar of the plunger hook model up and down by precise distances by altering the value of a distance
mate at different points in time. This tutorial also demonstrates the different playback modes available and
how to control the point of view of the animation by toggling the Orientation and Camera Views options.
The final animation rotates from a trimetric view to a front view of the model as the collar moves down,
pauses, and then returns to its original position.

After completing and repeating this tutorial, I feel confident manipulating states in the motion
manager to change different aspects of the animation in the ways the tutorial demonstrates. However,
there are many features not discussed in the tutorial that I will have to explore myself before becoming
fully comfortable with SolidWorks animations.
