Learning Competencies: Solves equations transformable to quadratic equations (including rational
algebraic equations) (M9AL-Ic-d-1)

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

(1) simplify and transform equations that are not yet written in
standard form (ax2 + bx + c = 0)
(2) simplify and transform rational algebraic equations that are not yet written in
standard form (ax2 + bx + c = 0)
(3) solve quadratic equations

Lesson 1: Solving Equations Transformable to Quadratic Equations

What is it

There are equations that are transformable into quadratic equations. These equations may be
given in different forms. Hence, the procedures in transforming these equations into quadratic equations
may also be different.
Once the equations are transformed into quadratic equations, then they can be solved using the
different methods, such as extracting square roots, factoring, completing the square and using quadratic
formula.
Example: Solve x (x -5) = 36
Solution:
This is a quadratic equation that is not yet written in standard form.
 To write the quadratic equation in standard form, simplify the expression.
x (x-5) = 36 x2 -5x = 36 (Apply Distributive Property.)
 Write the resulting quadratic equation into standard form (ax2 + bx + c = 0)
x2 -5x = 36 x2 -5x – 36 = 0
 Use any of the four methods of solving quadratic equations in finding the
solutions of the equation x2 -5x – 36 = 0
Try factoring in finding for the solutions of the equation.
x2 -5x – 36 = 0 (x - 9) (x + 4) = 0 (Find for the factors.)
x - 9 = 0 or x + 4 = 0 (Equate each factor to zero.)
x = 9 or x = -4 (Solve each resulting
equation.)
Checking: For x = 9 For x = -4
x (x -5) = 36 x (x - 5) = 36
9(9-5) = 36 -4 (-4 - 5) = 36
9 (4) = 36 -4 (-9) = 36
36 = 36 36 = 36
Both values of x satisfy the given equation.
So, the equation x (x- 5) = 36 is true when x = 9 or when x = -4.
Answer: The equation x (x- 5) = 36 has two solutions: x = 9 or when x = -4.

3
There are quadratic equations which are not yet written in standard form. Those equations need
to be transformed to standard form.
Once the equations are transformed into quadratic equations, then they can be solved using any
of the methods of solving quadratic equations.
Example: Solve (x+5)2 + (x-2)2 = 37
Solution: The given equation is a quadratic equation but is not yet written in standard form.
 Simplify and transform the equation into standard form, then solve it using
any of the methods of solving quadratic equation.
(x + 5)2 + (x-2)2= 37 (x2 +10x + 25) + (x2 -4x + 4) = 37(Expand each binomial.)
x2 +x2 +10x - 4x + 25+ 4 = 37 (Combine similar terms.)
2x2 + 6x + 29 = 37 (Add similar terms.)
2x2 + 6x – 8 = 0 (Express in standard form, ax2 + bx +c = 0.)
2x2 + 6x – 8 =0 (2x – 2) (x + 4) = 0 (Find the factors.)
2x – 2 = 0 or x + 4 = 0 (Equate each factor to zero.)
x = 1 or x = -4 (Solve each resulting equation.)
Answer: The solutions of the equation are x = 1 or x = -4.
These values of x make the equation (x + 5)2 + (x-2)2= 37 true.

x2 – 11x + 24 = 0 (x -3) (x -8) = 0 (Find the factors.)
x – 3 = 0 or x – 8 =0 (Equate each factor to zero.)
x = 3 or x = 8 (Solve each resulting equation.)

The solutions of the equation are x = 3 or x = 8.

Lesson 3: Solving Rational Algebraic Equations Transformable to

Quadratic Equations

What is it

In solving rational algebraic equations, you need to transform it into quadratic equation. There
are two roots or solutions in quadratic equations. But sometimes there is what we call as an extraneous
root.
 An extraneous root is a solution of an equation derived from an original equation. However, it
is not a solution of the original equation.
To solve the equation, here are the procedures need to be followed.
8 4x
Example: Find the roots of x + =1+ .
x−2 x−2

8 4x
Solution: The equation of x + =1+ is a rational algebraic equation that can be written in
x−2 x−2
the form
ax2 + bx + c = 0.
a. Multiply both sides of the equation by the Least Common Multiple (LCM) of all
denominators. In the given equation, the LCM is x - 2.
8 4x 8 4x
x+ =1+ (x-2) (x + ) = (x -2) (1 + )
x−2 x−2 x−2 x−2
(Multiply both sides of the equation by the LCM (x-2)

8(x−2) 4 x (x−2)
(x-2) x + = (x-2) +
x−2 x−2
8(x−2) 4 x (x−2)
(x-2) x + = (x-2) +
x−2 x−2

(x-2) (x) + 8 = x-2 + 4x (Simplify.)

2
x – 2x + 8 = x -2 + 4x
b. Write the resulting quadratic equation in standard form, ax2 + bx + c = 0.
x2 – 2x + 8 = x -2 + 4x x2 – 2x + 8 = 5x -2 (Combine like terms.)
x2 – 7x + 10 = 0

c. Find the roots of the resulting equation using any of the methods of solving quadratic
equations.
Try solving the equation by factoring.
x2 – 7x + 10 = 0 (x -5) (x -2) = 0 (Find for the factors.)
x – 5 = 0 or x – 2 = 0 (Equate each factors to zero.)
x = 5 or x = 2 (Solve each equation.)

The equation x2 – 7x + 10 = 0 has two solutions, x = 5 or x =2. However, when we will check
8 4x
the obtained values from the original equation x + =1+ , only x = 5 is true. Hence x =
x−2 x−2
5 is a solution.
8
Observe that at x =2, the value of is undefined or does not exist, the same with
x−2
