What is Ketamine Therapy?

What is ketamine infusion therapy?
Ketamine is an approved anesthetic agent, widely and safely used for decades
in medical treatment in Canada. In more recent years, therapeutic ketamine
has been extensively studied in lower doses in the treatment of mental health
conditions, including treatment-resistant depression (TRD)
depression-when-and-where-is-it-safe-202208092797).

What are the benefits of ketamine treatment?

Ketamine treatment boosts the production of glutamate by promoting the
growth of new synapses in the prefrontal cortex of the brain. This part of the
brain is critical for controlling memory and mood regulation. These low dose
treatments can create rapid-anti depressant effects sometimes characterized
by disassociation and weightlessness
What are the available ketamine treatment options?
Treatment is offered as medically recommended on both an inpatient basis
(enrolled in a treatment program at Homewood Health Centre) and outpatient
basis (day service with no overnight stay).
Intravenous (IV) ketamine

Intranasal esketamine; nasal spray (brand name ‘Spravato’)

How do you prepare for ketamine infusion treatment?

Access to ketamine interventions (inpatient and outpatient), starts with a
medical recommendation from a physician.

All individuals will have a medical assessment for this therapy by the ketamine
treatment team.

Fasting before treatment:

For IV ketamine infusion therapy; patients must fast for 5 hours

For esketamine nasal spray; patients must fast for 2 hours

Things to bring:
Head phones and soft, calming music

Eye mask

We do not recommend:
Watching shows or listening to podcasts or agitating music during a treatment
session

Drinking alcohol for 24 hours after a ketamine treatment

Driving for 24 hours after a ketamine treatment

What happens during a therapeutic ketamine session?

Individuals will be scheduled in for 8 treatments at the Homewood Health
Centre (2-3 sessions per week)
Upon arrival, a nurse will guide them to the treatment area where they will
explain the treatment process
(https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/302663)

A psychiatrist will calculate the ketamine dose, and a nurse or medical team
will administer the drug;

The entire treatment will take approximately 40 minutes for IV ketamine, and
only moments for the self-administered intranasal esketamine spray Spravato

After the treatment is complete, individuals will stay in the treatment area for
monitoring for up to 2 hours

For outpatient sessions, does someone need to accompany

the patient for their session?
Clients participating in the outpatient ketamine sessions will require a
responsible adult that they know (e.g. spouse, friend, family) to escort them
to/from their session and to ensure they return home safely, and monitor them
for a period of time after the session.

Do you collaborate with therapists during ketamine therapy

(e.g. ketamine-assisted psychotherapy)?
At this time, Homewood is not providing ketamine-assisted psychotherapy.
Patients who are receiving ketamine therapy during their inpatient stay will still
engage in their programs usual psychotherapy components, though, it is
important to note that this is not the same as ketamine-assisted
psychotherapy.

What are the chances that treatment will succeed?

Like other prescription medications, patients’ responses to ketamine may
vary. Recent Homewood Health ketamine outcomes show that 63% of patients
experienced a clinically significant improvement in anxiety and 60% in
depression. However, the success rate is unique to each patient’s response.
Do you need to do a full 8 sessions for this service?
Based on the research and outcomes of our highly experienced team, our
program requires that individuals commit to 8 sessions of treatment for
maximum effectiveness. Patients will be continuously assessed and monitored
throughout their course of treatment for any required adjustments.

Which conditions do Ketamine Therapy typically help treat?

Patients with depression, anxiety, PTSD, end-of-life distress, chronic pain,
drug/alcohol problems, and other conditions may be eligible for psychedelic-
assisted therapy with ketamine.

Cost of getting Ketamine Therapy Treatment?

Funding Options
– Inpatient
We believe in the transformative potential of these interventions for
individuals with treatment-resistant depression. Therefore, rTMS and IV
Ketamine are provided at no additional cost to individuals attending inpatient
treatment at Homewood Health Centre. Intranasal esketamine is available to
eligible inpatients, as medically indicated, for an additional fee.

– Outpatient
If deemed medically appropriate, intravenous ketamine, intranasal esketamine
and rTMS therapies are now available at Homewood Health Centre on an
outpatient basis for a fee. Patients travel to Homewood Health Centre to
receive care and services on an outpatient basis and are able to return home
the same day. These patients will return to the Homewood Health Centre for
each treatment session (depending on physician recommended treatment
protocol).
Are you currently dealing with depression or other mood
disorders?
If left untreated, depression and other mood disorders can significantly
impact your quality of life and overall functioning. However, with the proper
treatment and support, you can achieve long-term recovery and lead a
happy, fulfilling life.
