Introduction :-
As urbanization and population growth continue, managing
highway traffic has become critical to improving transportation efficiency.
Highway intersections, in particular, are hotspots for congestion and accidents due
to merging, diverging, and crossing traffic. A well-designed highway intersection
model can enhance traffic flow, reduce delays, and improve safety.
This report presents the development of a simulation model aimed at optimizing the
design of a highway intersection. By analyzing traffic patterns and using simulation
tools, this study evaluates the effectiveness of various configurations to minimize
congestion and maximize traffic throughput.

Objectives:-

The primary goal is to design a highway intersection model that:

1. Ensures smooth traffic flow.

2. Reduces vehicle delays and waiting times.
3. Minimizes congestion and potential bottlenecks.
4. Provides a safer and more efficient design for vehicles and pedestrians.
THEORY

Methodology

1. Data Collection: Traffic data (vehicle count, speed, and peak hour flow) from
existing intersections was collected.

2. Design Alternatives: Several intersection designs were considered, including

signalized, unsignalized, roundabouts, and grade-separated interchanges.

3. Simulation Tools: Traffic simulation software (e.g., VISSIM, AIMSUN) was

used to model and test intersection designs.

4. Evaluation Metrics: The models were evaluated based on:

Average delay per vehicle.
Queue lengths.
Traffic throughput.
Fuel consumption and emissions.

5. Optimization: Adjustments to lane configurations, signal timings, and geometric

designs were made iteratively to improve results. Geometric Terms in Road Design
1. Existing Intersection Design:
Description: Depicts the congested traffic conditions at the intersection.

2. Proposed Model:
Description: Visualizes the optimized hybrid intersection model with streamlined
traffic flow.

3. Simulation Results:
Description: Graphs showing reduced delays and queue lengths from the
simulation.
Results:-
1. Design Alternatives Tested:
Conventional Signalized Intersection: Moderate delays during peak hours; prone to
queue buildup.
Roundabout: Reduced delays by 15%, but unsuitable for high traffic volumes.
Grade-Separated Interchange: Excellent performance with 30% reduced travel time
but required higher construction costs.

2. Optimal Design: A hybrid design combining a roundabout and partial grade

separation was selected. It provided:
25% improvement in traffic throughput.
30% reduction in vehicle delays.
Significant decrease in emissions and fuel consumption.

3. Visualization: Below are images depicting the proposed model and traffic flow
patterns.

Conclusion :-
The optimized highway intersection model demonstrates substantial improvements
in traffic flow and vehicle delay reduction. By adopting a hybrid design that
incorporates a roundabout with grade separation, the model achieved a balance
between cost and performance. Future work could explore integrating smart traffic
management systems to further enhance intersection efficiency..
