Latin American Architecture
1. Latin American traditional architecture is featured through a combination of pre- Columbian heritage, cultural ties to Europe and the Americas, vernacular techniques, and a specific natural and climatic environment. After independence from Spain, Latin America looked to France and Italy for transformation into modern, cosmopolitan cities, which was its style. 2. Latin American traditional architecture is characterized by experimentation, exploration of local materials and resources, and a blend of pre-Columbian heritage and cultural ties to Europe and the Americas. It often incorporates vernacular techniques and adapts to the specific natural and climatic environment. The basic materials used in the architecture was timber, stone, adobe, local natural fibers, climate-driven design choices, and a cultural symbolism integration. 3. Famous architects of Latin American traditional architecture include: • Felipe de Uribe de Bedout: a Colombian architect known for his focus on user habits, local climate and landscape • Rogelio Salona: a prominent architect from Bogotá, Colombia, who blends modern design with traditional Latin American influences • Other Hispanic and Latino architects continue to shape urban spaces with a rich blend of traditional and contemporary design 4. Two famous buildings and structures from Latin American traditional architecture are: • Pyramids of the Maya civilization in Mexico • La Casa de los Teatro in San Juan, Puerto Rico, which is a historic theater built in the 18th century 5. The two famous structures from the Latin American traditional architecture were drawn on the next page. 6. Both the traditional and modern architectural styles were both influenced by the rich cultural heritage of Latin America, incorporating indigenous, colonial and modern cultural elements into their design. The modern architectural style is recognizable by its design features, while traditional architectural styles is characterized by different techniques, cost, energy, maintenance, materials, and technology.
