1. Find the vector and cartesian forms of the equation for the lines:
(i) The line through the origin and (5,−2,3) .
(ii) The line through the point P(3,−4,−1) parallel to the vector i + j +k .
(iii) The line through(1,1,1) and parallel to the z-axis.
(iv) The line through (2,4,5) perpendicular to the plane 3 x+7 y−5 z=21 .
(v) The line through (2,3 ,0) perpendicular to the vectors A=i+2 j+3 k and
B=3 i+4 j+5 k .
2. Find the equation for the plane of the following:
(i) The plane through(1,3,2) ,(3,−1,6) , (5,2,0) .
(ii) The plane through P(0,2,−1) normal to n=3 i−2 j−k .
3. Find the point of intersection of the lines x=2 t+1 , y=3 t +2 , z=4 t +3 and x= λ +2 ,
y=2 λ+ 4 , z=−4 λ−1 and then find the plane determined by these lines.
4. Convert the following:

(i) The point 3 from cylindrical to rectangular coordinates.

(ii) The point ( √ 3,1,4) from rectangular to cylindrical coordinates.

6. Find the directional derivative of the functions:

(ii) f ( x , y , z )=x 3 + y 3 + z 3 at the point (1,−1,2) in the direction of i +2 j +k .
7. Find the equation for the tangent plane and the normal line at the point P on the given
surface:
(i) x 2 y +xz 2 =2 y 2 z , P=(1,1,1) .
(ii) 2 z−x 2 , P=(2 ,0 ,2 ) .

(iii) √ 4−x 2−2 y 2 , P=(1 ,−1,1 ) .


8. Sketch the curve f ( x , y )=c together with ∇ f and the tangent line at the given point. Then
write an equation for the tangent line:

(i) x 2 + y 2 =4 , ( √ 2 , √ 2) .
(ii) xy=−4 , (2 ,−2 ) .
