30. Derive an expression for torque acting on an electric dipole placed in uniform electric field.

i) a single point charge and ii) a uniform electric field?
32. Mention three limitations of Ohm’s law.
33. Show that current density, j = σ E. Where symbols have their usual meaning.
34. Derive an expression for angular frequency of revolution for a charged particle moving perpendicular to
a uniform magnetic field.
35. Define magnetization of a sample. Is it a scalar or a vector? Mention its SI unit.
36. A sinusoidal voltage of rms value of 100 V, and frequency 50 Hz is applied to a series LR circuit in
which R = 3 and L = 12.75 mH. Find (a) inductive reactance and b) impedance of the circuit.

38. Derive an expression for effective emf and effective internal resistance of two cells of different emfs
and internal resistances connected in parallel.

40. a) State and explain Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. (2)
b) Derive an expression for emf induced in a straight conductor moving perpendicular to a uniform

41. Show that the voltage lags behind the current by 900 in an ac circuit containing pure capacitor. Write the
phasor diagram corresponding to the circuit.
VI. Answer any TWO of the following questions: 2 × 5 = 10
42. Two point charges of +4 nC and +8 nC are placed at the points A and B respectively separated by a
distance 0.2 m in air. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant electric field at the midpoint ‘O’
of the line joining A and B. What will be the magnitude of force experienced by a point charge of -2 nC
placed at ‘O’?
43. ABCD is a square of side 2 m. Charges of 5nC, + 10nC and -5nC are placed at corners A, B and C
respectively. What is the work done in transferring a charge of 5µC from D to the point of intersection
of the diagonals?
44. Calculate i) the free electron density and ii) the average drift speed of conduction electrons in a copper
wire of cross-sectional area 1.0×10–7 m2 carrying a current of 1.5 A. Assume that each copper atom
contributes roughly one conduction electron. The density of copper is 9.0 × 103 kg/m3 and its atomic
mass is 63.5 u.
45. A wire of length 1.0 cm carrying a current of 10 A is placed well inside a solenoid perpendicular to its
axis. The solenoid is of length 0.9 m, radius 5 cm and contains 500 turns. If the current through the
solenoid is 5 A, calculate the magnetic force on the wire.
