the most ECONOMIC PROPORTIONS
of concrete ingredients to obtain a COHESIVE and
DURABLE concrete of the desired STRENGTH
and WORKABILITY

Environmental Exposure Conditions

Degree of Quality Control
Very good: Fresh cement from single source, weigh-batching of all
materials, aggregates supplied in single sizes, control of
aggregate grading & moisture content, control of water
added, frequent supervision, regular workability & strength
tests, field laboratory facilities.

Good : Carefully stored cement & periodic tests, weigh-batching of


all materials, controlled water, graded aggregates supplied,
occasional grading & moisture tests, periodic check of
workability & strength intermittent supervision and
experienced workers.

Fair : Proper storage of cement, volume batching of all


aggregates allowing for bulking of sand, weigh batching of
cement, water content controlled by inspection of mix,
occasional supervision & tests.

DETERMINE TARGET MEAN STRENGTH OF CONCRETE AS

CHOOSE THE WATER CEMENT RATIO FOR THE TARGET MEAN


STRENGTH ( FIG.2 OF IS 10262-1982)

CHECK THIS W-C RATIO AGAINST MAX W-C RATIO FOR THE
REQUIREMENT OF DURABILITY. (TABLE 5, IS:456-2000)

ADOPT THE LOWER OF THE TWO VALUES.

MAKE A MORE PRECISE ESTIMATE OF THE PRELIMINARY W-C


RATIO CORRESPONDING TO THE TARGET AVERAGE STRENGTH.

Estimate the water content and percentage of F.A by absolute


volume of total aggregate (Table 4 & 5 of IS:10262)

CALCULATE THE CEMENT CONTENT FROM W-C RATIO AND FINAL
WATER CONTENT ARRIVED AFTER ADJUSTMENT.

Cement Content = Water content / (w-c ratio)


CHECK THE CEMENT CONTENT SO CALCULATED AGAINST THE
MIN. CEMENT CONTENT FROM THE REQUIREMENT OF
DURABILITY. ADOPT GREATER OF THE TWO VALUES.

QUANTITY OF WATER, CEMENT PER UNIT VOLUME OF CONCRETE


AND % OF SAND IN TOTAL AGGREGATE ARE ALREADY
DETERMINED.

CALCULATE THE C.A AND F.A CONTENTS PER UNIT VOLUME OF


CONCRETE AS PER THE FOLLOWING FORMULA.

RESULTS :
1. TARGET MEAN STRENGTH

= 30 + 1.65 x 5
= 38.25 MPa

2. FIND W/C RATIO

From Fig 2 of IS:10262, corresponding to 38.25 MPa,


W-C RATIO IS 0.47

Max w-c ratio for SEVERE exposure,


IS 0.45

Adopt lower of the two

i.e W-C RATIO IS 0.45


3.FIND WATER CONTENT AND % OF F.A

From ,Table 4 of IS:10262-2004

For 20mm MSA, Z II F.A, w-c ratio of 0.6, C.F of 0.8,

Water content of Concrete is 186 Kg / Cu.m


F.A as a %age of total aggregate by absolute volume is 35%

4.Since W-C ratio is 0.45, C.F is 0.85, apply Correction as per Table 6 of
IS:10262-2004

Therefore required F.A as a percentage of total aggregate by absolute volume is 35 –


3 = 32% (refer next slide)

similarly, required water content is 186 + (186*1.5/100) = 188.8 L

5. FIND CEMENT CONTENT

W/C = 0.45
WATER = 188.8 LITRES
CEMENT = 188.8/0.45
= 420 kg.
Check for min. cement content for Durability,
The min. cement content for M30 grade, severe exposure is 320 Kg/cu.m
Hence the worked cement content satisfies the condition.

6. THE ENTRAPPED AIR

For specified MSA of 20mm, the amount of entrapped air in wet concrete is 2%
( Table 3 of IS:10262-2004)

So the absolute volume of concrete is 1 – 0.02 = 0.98 Cu.m


7. DETERMINATION OF COARSE AND FINE AGGREGATE

Substitute the values known in the:

i.e. V = [ W + (C / Sc) + 1 / p x ( fa /Sfa )] x (1 /1000 )

= [ 188.8 + 420/3.15 + 1 / 0.32 x fa / 2.6] x 1 /1000

fa = 547.29 kg/cu.m

similarly, Ca= 1194.30 kg/cu.m

IN THE ABOVE MIX DESIGN, NO ADMIXTURE HAS BEEN USED.


BY USING PLASTICISER ,CEMENT CONTENT COULD BE REDUCED TO
ACHIEVE THE SAME SLUMP.
CAN WE OPTIMIZE THE MIX?
• Yes, we can optimize the mix.
In the above example, 28days cube strength obtained as per
IS : 10262 – 2004 is far greater than the target strength.
• For any concrete, if it is to be good, it should have both
strength and durability.
• IS : 456 – 2000 gives out certain criteria for durability.
• Keeping this in mind, the design can be optimized as follows
