Performance Task - Math 10

DATA FITTING USING POLYNOMIAL CURVES

In this task, you are a researcher and a data analyst.

As a researcher, you are going to research at least two related bivariate data.
Examples of real time data are weather forecast for the past 30 days, currency exchange,
and the like. You may conduct your own survey as well such as number of COVID-19 cases
or deaths per day in your city. Note that this data must be a bivariate data or two-variable
data or something that we can represent as 𝑥 and 𝑦 where 𝑦 is a function of 𝑥. You may
also conduct self-reported surveys like
1. Mental Health and Academic Performance
2. Caffeine Intake and Sleep Quality
3. Homework Time and Stress Level

As a data analyst, you are going to make polynomial curve fitting based on each real
time data you have researched. In polynomial curve fitting, we find the best curve or line
or graph that fits our data points and from that graph, we determine the equation or model
of the real time data and from that we may make predictions.
How do we do polynomial curve fitting? There are many softwares for curve fitting.
One of them is MATLAB. However, you will only use Microsoft Excel for convenience and
simplicity.
Here is the summary of your task.
(1) Research at least 2 real time bivariate data.
(2) Search in internet or Youtube how to do polynomial curve fitting in Microsoft
Excel.
(3) Make a polynomial curve and equation that represent each of your data.
(4) Answer the following.
[i] Shortly narrate how you acquired your real time data.
[ii] How did you decide on the degree of each of your polynomial?
[iii] Generate at least three insights from your graph.
(5) All answers must be shown in PPT with the graph and equation be the first
content of the first few slides. Next slides will contain the answers for (4).
