1) Draw [110], [012], [133] directions within a cubic unit cell and [1120] direction for hexagonal
unit cell.
2) Sketch within a cubic unit cell the following planes:
(a) (011)
b) (112)
c) (1010) for hexagonal unit cell
3) Determine the indices for the directions shown in the following cubic unit cell
4) Determine the Miller indices for the planes shown in the following unit cell
5) Derive linear density expressions for FCC [100], [111] and [110] directions in terms of the
atomic radius R.
6) Derive planar density expressions for BCC (100) and (110) planes in terms of the atomic
radius R.
7) CdS has a cubic unit cell. X-ray diffraction data gives the interplanar spacing between (110)
planes as 4.12 Å. If the measured density is 4.82 gr/cm3, find the crystal structure of CdS. The
atomic weights of Cd and S are 112.40 and 32.06 g, respectively and NO=6.02×1023
atoms/mole.
8) Calculate the number of vacancies per cubic meter in gold (Au) at 900⸰C. The energy for
vacancy formation is 0.98 eV/atom. Furthermore, the density and atomic weight for Au are
18.63 g/cm3 (at 900⸰C) and 196.9 g/mol, respectively.
STUDY QUESTIONS
1) Draw [111], [123], [122] directions within a cubic unit cell and [1100] direction for hexagonal
unit cell.
2) Sketch the given planes: (111), (201), (1011)
3) Determine the indices for the directions shown in the following cubic unit cell.
4) Determine the Miller indices for the planes shown in the following unit cell.
5) Derive linear density expressions for BCC [100], [111] and [110] directions in terms of the
atomic radius R.
6) Derive planar density expressions for FCC (100) and (110) planes in terms of the atomic
radius R.
7) We are trying to determine whether the structure of an iron alloy is BCC or FCC. X-ray
diffraction results give that the distance between (111) planes is 2.1 Å. Find the structure of
the alloy if rFe is 1.28 Å.
8) Cu and Au form a substitutional solid solution. Sketch a FCC unit cell and designate the most
likely sites for the atoms for
a) Cu3Au
b) CuAu alloys.
