Abstract

As network design specialists, we have been asked to come up with a solution to fix the

outdated network infrastructure at Centennial college. After taking an overall look at the

current network, we came to the decision that the network infrastructure needs a

redesign. In addition, the college recently did a survey for all students attending the

college to rate the quality of the current services and the results were unsatisfactory.

There are many changes that we are going to have to implement for this outdated

infrastructure to become functional again, and meet the proper network standards.

Introduction

The network infrastructure at centennial college has had a lot of technical issues lately and needs

a redesign. Centennial college has been operating with an outdated infrastructure to our

discovery, and the students are now starting to complain about the issues their having. We

noticed it’s because all the routers and switches are running old versions of IOS, which is

making the network slow. The college has provided us with a budget of $30,000 for each

academic year. We have also been able to get in contact with the IT support team to develop a

Wishlist of the more important items that have to be implemented into this redesign. The plan is

to key in on the most critical parts of the network that are slowing it down and troubleshoot

what’s left of the network, so we can meet the technical standards and have a successful

completion of this project.

Current Network Infrastructure Layout

Campus-A 4 Classrooms School of media = 500 Students

5|CNET-301
Campus-B 12 Classrooms Business = 2000 Students

Engineering = 3000 Students

Health Sciences = 1500 Students

Campus-C 8 Classrooms General Arts = 350 Students

Support Staff = 20

Campus-D 4 Classrooms Aviation = 100 Students

Overall, the college has about 7450 students in total including staff and management. As you can

see by these numbers it is going to be hard to have a successful network infrastructure with all

these students on an outdated plan. We feel like the current design of the networks implemented

on each campus isn’t very big and a bit complicated and can be redesigned in a more simple and

more efficient way that makes everything operate much faster.

Figure 1 shows the current Network design
Users of the network were requested to take an e-survey to assess the network's current
performance. The following is an overview of customer feedback:

7|CNET-301
Thus, our project aims to provide the best out of the survey and ensure that we have built
the suitable network design, with following each technical and business constraint.

Proposed Network Design Diagrams

Our network design diagrams are based on the 2 stages, as proposed by the college. Stage
1 will be completed in the first year, concurrent with the completion of the campus A and
campus B migration processes, while, Stage 2 will be completed in the second year, with the
relocation of campuses C and D.

IP Address Distribution
VLSM: VLSM is an abbreviation for Variable Length Subnet Mask, which refers to a subnet
design that employs more than one mask in the same network, implying that more than one mask
is utilized for distinct subnets of a single class A, B, C, or network. It is used to improve the use
of subnets, which might be of varying sizes. It is also known as the process of subnetting a

10 | C N E T - 3 0 1
network. The addressing scheme for VLANs is distributed as per the VLSM addressing scheme
and below is the distribution range for the switched VLANs.

Campus IP Range Subnet Mask No. of No. of

Campus D 172.16.6.1 – 172.16.6.254 /24 128 254

As per the prerequisite for allocating IP addresses for staff and management, and
students and guests, we use VLAN subnetting plan and it will be distributed as
follows:

Voice over IP Phone

A VoIP phone system routes calls as digital data over the Internet using a high-speed broadband
or cable connection. All you need at your small business, other from an Internet connection, to
get started with an offsite-hosted service are suitable phones. The following diagram shows, how
VoIP phones are beneficial:

Before recommending a suitable VoIP phone, make sure that there are no best providers for this.

That is not to say that there isn't the finest VoIP system for business. The most critical aspect of

selecting a VoIP phone service is to complete thorough research. Examine the present office

phone system, Internet connection, current and future call volume, trends, and if businesses

prefer to handle the system in-house or have it managed by the supplier. All these factors will

have a considerable influence on the initial and recurring prices, the functionality available, and

the simplicity of setup. However, once everything is said and done, users will have a flexible,

13 | C N E T - 3 0 1
scalable telephone system that could increase your team's productivity while saving you

thousands of dollars.

Our team recommends using a grand stream VoIP phone. One specific model is the GRP2614,

which is a 4-line carrier-grade IP phone with a zero-touch setup for efficient bulk deployment

and control. It has a stylish appearance and a slew of next-generation technologies such as two

LCD panels with 40 virtual multi-purpose keys (VPNs), built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth compatibility,

dual Gigabit ports, and more. The GRP series contains carrier-grade security features like as

secure boot, dual firmware images, and encrypted data storage to enable enterprise-level

security. The GRP2614 is supported by Grand stream’s Device Management System (GDMS),

which provides a centralized interface for configuring, provisioning, managing, and monitoring

Grand stream endpoint installations.

Implementation Plan
Upgrading the network is critical for improved performance and flexibility. On November 29,

2022, we intend to begin the first stage of network upgrade for Campus A and B for the year

2023, and on November 29, 2023, we plan to begin the second stage of network upgrade for

Campus C and D for the year 2024. The biggest advantage of selecting this date is that most

college resources are used to a minimum. As a result, this is a good moment to upgrade with less

trouble. Through the college mail system, all workers, including students and other staff, receive

notices and updates on improvements or maintenance.

Conclusion
After conducting our research and developing a strategic and efficient plan for redesigning the

current outdated network infrastructure, our team believes that our new network design will

mitigate current and future risks for the college network. We have updated all routers and

switches and updated the OS. Network speeds should be running at a faster rate than the previous

network, and the students will have a way better experience at the college when using the

network. We would also like to conduct a survey after at least a month of the new infrastructure

operations to get feedback on how it’s been holding up at the college, but overall I feel like this

implementation was a success.
