Abstract
As network design specialists, we have been asked to come up with a solution to fix the
outdated network infrastructure at Centennial college. After taking an overall look at the
current network, we came to the decision that the network infrastructure needs a
redesign. In addition, the college recently did a survey for all students attending the
college to rate the quality of the current services and the results were unsatisfactory.
There are many changes that we are going to have to implement for this outdated
infrastructure to become functional again, and meet the proper network standards.

Introduction
The network infrastructure at centennial college has had a lot of technical issues lately and needs
a redesign. Centennial college has been operating with an outdated infrastructure to our
discovery, and the students are now starting to complain about the issues their having. We
noticed it’s because all the routers and switches are running old versions of IOS, which is
making the network slow. The college has provided us with a budget of $30,000 for each
academic year. We have also been able to get in contact with the IT support team to develop a
Wishlist of the more important items that have to be implemented into this redesign. The plan is
to key in on the most critical parts of the network that are slowing it down and troubleshoot
what’s left of the network, so we can meet the technical standards and have a successful

Overall, the college has about 7450 students in total including staff and management. As you can
see by these numbers it is going to be hard to have a successful network infrastructure with all
these students on an outdated plan. We feel like the current design of the networks implemented
on each campus isn’t very big and a bit complicated and can be redesigned in a more simple and

Users of the network were requested to take an e-survey to assess the network's current
performance. The following is an overview of customer feedback:

Thus, our project aims to provide the best out of the survey and ensure that we have built
the suitable network design, with following each technical and business constraint.

IP Address Distribution
VLSM: VLSM is an abbreviation for Variable Length Subnet Mask, which refers to a subnet
design that employs more than one mask in the same network, implying that more than one mask
is utilized for distinct subnets of a single class A, B, C, or network. It is used to improve the use
of subnets, which might be of varying sizes. It is also known as the process of subnetting a

network. The addressing scheme for VLANs is distributed as per the VLSM addressing scheme
and below is the distribution range for the switched VLANs.
As per the prerequisite for allocating IP addresses for staff and management, and
students and guests, we use VLAN subnetting plan and it will be distributed as
follows:

Voice over IP Phone
A VoIP phone system routes calls as digital data over the Internet using a high-speed broadband
or cable connection. All you need at your small business, other from an Internet connection, to
get started with an offsite-hosted service are suitable phones. The following diagram shows, how
VoIP phones are beneficial:
Before recommending a suitable VoIP phone, make sure that there are no best providers for this.
That is not to say that there isn't the finest VoIP system for business. The most critical aspect of
selecting a VoIP phone service is to complete thorough research. Examine the present office
phone system, Internet connection, current and future call volume, trends, and if businesses
prefer to handle the system in-house or have it managed by the supplier. All these factors will
have a considerable influence on the initial and recurring prices, the functionality available, and
the simplicity of setup. However, once everything is said and done, users will have a flexible,

scalable telephone system that could increase your team's productivity while saving you
thousands of dollars.
Our team recommends using a grand stream VoIP phone. One specific model is the GRP2614,
which is a 4-line carrier-grade IP phone with a zero-touch setup for efficient bulk deployment
and control. It has a stylish appearance and a slew of next-generation technologies such as two
LCD panels with 40 virtual multi-purpose keys (VPNs), built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth compatibility,
dual Gigabit ports, and more. The GRP series contains carrier-grade security features like as
secure boot, dual firmware images, and encrypted data storage to enable enterprise-level
security. The GRP2614 is supported by Grand stream’s Device Management System (GDMS),
which provides a centralized interface for configuring, provisioning, managing, and monitoring

Also, to have a suitable provider, our team suggests using Zoom Phone the company, and the reason for
that is evident in the below picture. Moreover, they allow users to start investing with just 10$, per month.

A remote desktop connection must be created on the server farm to allow staff, students, and
other personnel to access the desktop remotely. The users will be created using Active Directory.

Cisco isr4331/k9
19 | C N E T - 3 0 1
Cisco isr4331/k9 supports USB and has 2 RJ45 ports at the same time. In I/O Expansions for
Integrated, it provides 6 expansions. Users can add accessories according to their needs, such as
expansion slot type SFP and network interface module. It also supports a variety of protocols,
like VPN, Secure Shell, Network Admissions control, Voice and Video Enabled VPN, etc.
Cisco WS-c2960+48PST-S
20 | C N E T - 3 0 1
WS-C2960+48PST-S supports 48 ports 10/100 Ethernet Ports. It has 4 SFP ports at the same
time. The SFP port supports RJ45, SMF and MMF fiber at the same time. In terms of network,
the forwarding bandwidth supports 16Gbps, and the maximum support for Vlan is 64 Group.
Cisco SG220-50-K9-NA
Cisco SG220-50-K9-NA supports 50 port of gigabit ethernet network and has 2 gigabit ethernet
expansion slots at the same time. Because this is a smart plus product line. For the gigabit
ethernet expansion slot, it can support SFP at the same time.
ASA5516-FPWR-K9
21 | C N E T - 3 0 1
ASA5516-FPWR-K9 has 8 ports and supports RJ45. It also supports PoE (RJ-45) Port. In terms
of firewall security appliances, it also supports multiple security appliances at the same time.
Including support for intrusion prevention, remote access authentication, malware protection,
threat protection, URL filtering, stateful packet filtering. In terms of network, it uses
10/100/1000Base-T.

fiber. Because it is a layer 3 switch, so two sets of power supply are provided, which can achieve
uninterrupted power supply.
APC - SYH4K6RMT
APC - SYH4K6RMT is a UPS with 208V output voltage and a maximum power consumption of
100%. It has 4 sets of power modules, which can provide uninterrupted power supply for
equipment.
Its weakness is that it needs to occupy 8U, which will take up more space, so more space is
needed in planning.

Implementation Plan
Upgrading the network is critical for improved performance and flexibility. On November 29,
2022, we intend to begin the first stage of network upgrade for Campus A and B for the year
2023, and on November 29, 2023, we plan to begin the second stage of network upgrade for
Campus C and D for the year 2024. The biggest advantage of selecting this date is that most
college resources are used to a minimum. As a result, this is a good moment to upgrade with less
trouble. Through the college mail system, all workers, including students and other staff, receive
Conclusion
After conducting our research and developing a strategic and efficient plan for redesigning the
current outdated network infrastructure, our team believes that our new network design will
mitigate current and future risks for the college network. We have updated all routers and
switches and updated the OS. Network speeds should be running at a faster rate than the previous
network, and the students will have a way better experience at the college when using the
network. We would also like to conduct a survey after at least a month of the new infrastructure
operations to get feedback on how it’s been holding up at the college, but overall I feel like this
