Massing is a tool used primarily for conceptual design, enabling architects and designers to explore the form and volume of a
project before delving into detailed design.
A Revit Mass is a 3D geometric form that acts as a placeholder or a conceptual representation of a building or element.
How to Create a Mass in Revit
Activate Massing Mode
Draw or Sculpt the Mass
Load into Project
Apply Building Components
Steps of Developing a Revit mass
Step 1: Enable Massing Tools
1. Open Revit , Massing & Site, Click Show Mass
Step 2: Create a New Mass
1. In-Place Mass: Click In-Place Mass , Give the mass a name, This opens the mass editing
2. Mass Family: Go to the File tab → new → Family, Choose a Conceptual Mass template.
Step 3: Design the Basic Form
1. Start with 2D Shapes: Draw or sketch, you can create multiple sketches on different planes for more complex designs.
2. Create 3D Geometry: Extrude: Revolve: Sweep Blend
3. Modify the Form:
Step 4: Refine the Mass
1. Set Work Planes: Use the Set Work Adjust Parameters. Apply Levels: Mass Floors
Step 5: Transition to Building Elements
1. Apply Walls, Floors, Roofs Create Curtain Systems:
Step 6: Analyze the Mass
1. Solar and Energy Analysis: Volume and Area Calculations:
Step 7: Save and Reuse
• Save the mass as a family for future use.

Purposes of Revit Massing:  Energy and Environmental Analysis

 Flexibility in Design Duplication
 Early Conceptual Design
 Complex Geometry Modeling
 Integration with Building Components
Application and purpose of Revit Mass • Volume studies

• Early-stage conceptual design. • Designing complex structures

• Conducting possible studies.

 Site Contextualization
 Design Validation
 Educational and Presentation Purposes
Types of Revit mass
1. in-Place Mass
Used for one-off, project-specific designs that don’t require reuse, Used to create site-specific forms, such as a unique building footprint or
sculptural element.

2. Conceptual Mass Family

Designed for reusability and standardization. Used to Create Prototyping standard design elements like modular structures or reusable
forms.

3. Solid Mass
Represents tangible, built forms. Used to Create Early volumetric studies or creating placeholders for building geometry.

4. Void Mass
Used for creating negative spaces within solids Used to Create Subtracting atriums, voids, or other hollow areas within a design.

5. Parametric Mass
Allows for flexible design iterations Used to Design adaptive forms, like facades or structures that require scaling.

6. Mass Floors
Used for area and volume calculations Used to Divides a mass into levels that correspond to floor plates.

7. Adaptive Mass
Used for creating forms that adapt to different site or design requirements Used to Create Custom curtain systems, tensile structures, or
organic forms.

8. Environmental Analysis Mass

Used for sustainability and performance evaluation Used to Create Testing building orientation, solar gain, or shadow patterns.

9. Topographical or Contextual Mass

Helps in understanding the project’s context and interaction with the environment Used to Create Urban
planning or site-specific studies.
10. Organic or Freeform Mass
Used for creating iconic or avant-garde architectural designs Used to Create Landmark buildings, sculptures, or artistic elements.
