LESSON 5

Understanding Ways to Collect Data

The researcher opened the online survey for eight weeks. While the online survey was
open, physical surveying was also utilized. This added a few more weeks to collect the
questionnaires. The same time was also devoted in the interviews done.

1. Determine the method in data collection.

In determining what data collection method to use, you must consider what pieces of
information need to be collected, the required schedule to collect the data, and other essential
preparation before collecting them. Remember that choosing the right method is fundamental to
your data collection. These collection methods can be in the forms of surveys, focus group
discussions, interviews, and document reviews to name a few.
In the given sample, the information collected were student graduates' information
regarding their academic and work profiles. It also included some ratings of employers on their
satisfaction toward the graduates' competence. These were appropriate because the research
objectives directed these; thus, this resulted in getting accurate inputs.

2. Collect the data for your research.

With your planned strategies and methods to use at this stage, you may begin collecting
data, organizing them manually, and choosing the available technology in managing them. It is a
good practice to always check your plan.
In the case of the researcher in the sample tracer study, the primary means to collect the
data from the students was surveying. On the other hand, data from the employers were
collected through interviews. The supporting data were gathered through document reviews and
online research.

Socio-Emotional Learning Assessment

Assess your learning experience in this lesson by evaluating your feelings based on the
given statements. Tick () on the emoticon that best represents your experience.

My Learning Experience
  
1. I was given ample opportunity to participate and contribute
to the discussions and tasks done.

2. I was encouraged to think well in the activities, tasks, and

discussions.

3. My teachers and classmates showed support and extended

help whenever I needed it.

4. There are precautionary measures in the activities to keep me

from any harm, be it physically or emotionally.

5. The lesson is manageable. Also, we were given a break to

ensure a conducive learning situation.
