Stage 1: The Idea

💭 Think of an issue you encounter frequently (for example, I lost my left sock, I never hear my
alarm go off, I burnt one side of my toast…). In pairs or individually, discuss and come up with an
invention that would solve the issue. The problem and the invention can be as ridiculous or as
realistic as you want. The invention must be something that does not exist currently. However, you
can use existing gadgets as inspiration.

💻 Write a description of the problem and the invention (what it does, what parts/materials is it
made up of, what is its name, how do people use it). You must use passive voice and relative
clauses in your description, which must be between 150-200 words long.

🖼️ Once you’ve written the description, you must include a picture of the invention. To generate it,
you are allowed to use AI, or you may choose to draw it yourself. Make sure the picture is a good
representation of the description you have provided. Submit the link to your invention in campus,
make sure to change the privacy setting so that anyone with the link can see and comment on what
you’ve done.

Assessment
- Is your description complete?
- Did you comply with the word limit?
- Did you use passive voice and relative clauses?
- Did you make any grammatical or spelling mistakes?
- Did the picture of your invention match its description?
Stage 2: The Pitch

🦈 You will pitch your idea to possible investors in order to convince them to fund your invention.

👁️‍🗨️Watch How to Successfully Pitch an Idea. Based on the ideas the speaker develops, what
should your pitch look like? Plan out the structure of your pitch. If you want to go beyond, watch
this video.

👁️‍🗨️Watch these three examples of people pitching an idea to potential investors. What makes their
pitches effective? Take down notes of:

● Expressions they use

● Body language
● Tone

💻 Develop your pitch. You will have to plan what you are going to say to the possible investors
and the attitude you will have while standing and speaking in front of an audience. Plus, you will
need some visual support. In order to do this you may use websites like Genially’s pitch deck or
pitch.com. Optionally, you could make a traditional presentation in Google Slides, Canva, or the
software of your choice.

🎤 Deliver your pitch to the rest of the class. Your classmates will be potential financiers who will
be taking down notes on both your idea and performance, and ultimately decide which invention
they will invest on. Your pitch should not be longer than five minutes.

Assessment
- Did you plan the structure of your pitch according to the information provided in this lesson?
- Did you take down notes and share your ideas after watching the videos? Were you actively participating in
class?
- Did you use the expressions from the videos or others related to sales and investment we mentioned in class to
pitch your idea accurately?
- Was your presentation clearly delivered? Did all the members of the team speak loudly enough for everyone to
hear? Did you make eye contact with the audience? Did you attempt to catch their attention and keep them
engaged throughout? Was your visual support complete, relevant, and accurate?
- Did you actively and respectfully listen to others and take down notes during their presentations?
