Assignment Brief and Guidance:

Scenario/Design Problem: First design an Electronically Controlled Coffee Roaster Machine and
further develop it to a Smart Coffee Roasting and Brewing System.
Project Overview:
As an electronics/mechatronics design engineer in a company focused on smart appliances, you
have been given the exciting task of designing a "Smart Coffee Roasting and Brewing System." Your
role involves integrating sensors, controllers, and automation features to create a state-of-the-art
coffee solution that roasts and brews coffee beans to perfection.
System Requirements:
Electronically Controlled Coffee Roaster Machine
The coffee roaster machine is expected to provide precise and consistent control over the roasting
process. The system must be able to adjust temperature, duration, and agitation to achieve desired
roast profiles. User-friendliness, safety features, and energy efficiency are also crucial.

Smart Coffee Roasting and Brewing System

The smart coffee roasting and brewing system aims to provide coffee enthusiasts with a seamless
experience from bean to cup. The system should include the capability to roast green coffee beans,
monitor roasting parameters, and brew the roasted beans into a delicious cup of coffee.

Proposed Electronic and Mechanical Approaches:

To meet the requirements, you propose two approaches:
(a). an approach that combines advanced electronic control with robust mechanical design. The
roasting chamber will be equipped with a motorized drum for even bean agitation. An electronic
control system will manage temperature, duration, and user interface.

(b). an approach that combines advanced sensing technology with precise control mechanisms.
Sensors will monitor roast temperature and time, and the system will allow users to customize
brewing preferences.

Figure 1 shows the mechanical setup of the Electronically Controlled Coffee Roaster Machine and its
main components. It’s a closed box that contain coffee bean to be roasted,
(1) AC fan, (2) heater, (3) DC swing motor, (4) temperature sensor and (5) control panel.

Figure 1: Mechanical setup and main components of the Coffee Roaster Machine
The mechanical system already designed to meet the machine requirements as follow:
- Heater to make the temperature raise.
- AC fan to make the heater cool down.
- DC swing (with the proper mechanism) make the coffee bean turn back and forth by its
rotation directions.
- Temperature sensor feedback to the electronical controlled circuit board.

The controlled requirements for the machine:

• Coffee bean temperature and humidity are required to be controlled.
• A setpoint in the control panel: User can set temperature curve during roasting progress.
Typical roasting temperature ranges from 190 to 280 °C
• And a control panel with display and buttons as needed.

Task:
Part 1: Select and describe the main elements of an electronically controlled system.
(a). With reference to the customer brief requirements above you should make a literature review
on similar systems (P2).
(b). Propose some controlled techniques with detail analysing pros and cons of every proposed
technique (M1),
(c). Propose and describe the main elements of an electronically controlled system, which meets all
the customer requirements(P1).

Part 2: Design temperature-controlled system using closed loop control technique.

(a). Investigate on some sensors and controller units that can meet all the requirements for the
machine(P3).
(b). Make comparison on those devices (P4).
(c). Refine one “best” solution based on the behaviour of the heating box and required
temperature accuracy. In addition, you should include the specifications form the manufacture
datasheet (M2)
(d). With your selected one, design and implement a circuit that can interface all input sensors
and output heater, AC fan to control the temperature of the coffee bean box within the required
range. Use your prototype circuit to make some measurements for examining the performance of
the sensors, output AC fan, heater(D1).
(e). Critically investigate the behaviour of the systems by measurement its response parameters
based on several controlled methods and make recommendations for usage or improvement of
the proper system control technique(D2).
Part 3: Design and implement a computer-based measurement system to calibrate a temperature-
controlled system.
(a). Apply practical and computer-based methods to design and test a measurement system(P5).

(b). Describe and explain system’s accuracy, resolution, tolerances, repeatability and stability,
sensitivity and response time based on the measurement results(P6)

(c). Apply transfer functions for interpret the characteristics and behaviour of the temperature-
controlled system. In addition, using measurement results to interpolate the system transfer
functions parameters (M3).

(d). Use computer-based control with the proposed control parameters to make measurement of the
real temperature-controlled system and evaluate the performance of the new system compared to
previous designed system (D3).

Part 4: Now you need to focus on the Smart Coffee Roasting and Brewing System.
To meet the requirements, you propose an approach that combines advanced sensing technology
with precise control mechanisms. Sensors will monitor roast temperature and time, and the system
will allow users to customize brewing preferences.
(a). Propose an Internet of Things application to current temperature-controlled system. - Consider
current trends in technology, including the increase of wireless and Internet of Things (IoTs)
technology, benchmarking current temperature-controlled system performance with new IoTs
system (P7).

(b). Propose an upgraded model for current system with some new applicable IoTs features. In
addition, give an evaluation on the characteristics of the new IoTs system (M4).

(c). Analyse new proposed system (Roasting Accuracy: Measure the accuracy of roast temperature
and time compared to desired roast profiles. Brewing Precision: Evaluate the consistency of coffee
brewing results based on user preferences and strength selections) using appropriate analytical
techniques. Then write recommendation sheet to the customer with detail price, performance, pros,
and cons of the new system in comparison with the old one (D4).
