THEORY
 Chomsky Hierarchy
The Chomsky Hierarchy is a classification of formal languages based on their generative power and
the type of computational model required to recognize or generate them. Proposed by linguist Noam
Chomsky in 1956, the hierarchy categorizes languages into four levels, each with increasing
expressive power. These levels are important in computer science and linguistics as they define the
capabilities of different types of grammars and automata.
Levels of the Chomsky Hierarchy
1. Type 0: Recursively Enumerable Languages (Unrestricted Grammars)
2. Type 1: Context-Sensitive Languages
3. Type 2: Context-Free Languages
4. Type 3: Regular Languages

1. Type 0: Recursively Enumerable Languages (Unrestricted Grammars)


 Definition: Type 0 languages, or recursively enumerable languages, are the most general class
in the hierarchy. They can be generated by unrestricted grammars, where there are no
restrictions on production rules.
 Grammar Rules: Production rules can be of the form: α→β where α\alphaα and β\betaβ are
strings of symbols, and α\alphaα cannot be empty.
 Recognition Model: Turing Machine.
 Examples: Languages like {an bn cn dn | n ≥ 1} belong to this class, where arbitrary complex
patterns can be recognized.
 Characteristics:
o Capable of expressing any computable function, making them Turing-complete.
o Not all Type 0 languages are decidable, meaning there is no guarantee that a machine
will halt for every input.

2. Type 1: Context-Sensitive Languages


 Definition: Type 1 languages, or context-sensitive languages, are generated by context-
sensitive grammars. These languages are more restrictive than Type 0 but more expressive than
Type 2.
 Grammar Rules: Production rules must be of the form: αAβ→αγβ where AAA is a non-terminal,
α\alphaα and β\betaβ are strings of terminals and non-terminals, and γ\gammaγ is a non-
empty string. This rule implies that the length of αγβ must be greater than or equal to the length
of αAβ, ensuring context-sensitive replacements.
 Recognition Model: Linear Bounded Automaton (LBA), which is a Turing machine with limited
memory.
 Examples: Languages like {an bn cn | n ≥ 1}, where strings have equal numbers of a's, b's, and
c's.
 Characteristics:
o Context-sensitive languages require context to ensure that certain patterns exist in a
string.
o They are generally more complex and can represent nested or hierarchical structures.

3. Type 2: Context-Free Languages


 Definition: Type 2 languages, or context-free languages, are generated by context-free
grammars. These languages are less expressive than Type 1 but simpler and more widely used
in applications like programming languages.
 Grammar Rules: Production rules are of the form: A→γA where AAA is a single non-terminal,
and γ\gammaγ is a string of terminals and/or non-terminals.
 Recognition Model: Pushdown Automaton (PDA), which uses a stack for memory.
 Examples: Languages like balanced parentheses ({an bn | n ≥ 1}), arithmetic expressions, and
syntax of many programming languages.
 Characteristics:

4. Type 3: Regular Languages


 Definition: Type 3 languages, or regular languages, are generated by regular grammars. They
are the simplest and most restrictive class of languages in the Chomsky hierarchy.
 Grammar Rules: Production rules are of the form: A→aB or A→aA where AAA and BBB are non-
terminals, and aaa is a terminal symbol.
 Recognition Model: Finite Automaton (FA), which includes both deterministic (DFA) and
nondeterministic (NFA) models.

 Characteristics:

Importance of the Chomsky Hierarchy

the cost of complexity, which is a key consideration in designing efficient algorithms and systems.
 Post Correspondence Problem
The Post Correspondence Problem (PCP) is a classic undecidable problem in formal language
theory, first proposed by Emil Post in 1946. PCP deals with determining if two lists of strings can be
arranged to form identical concatenations.
Problem Statement
Given two lists of strings over an alphabet:
1. List A = [a1, a2, ..., an]
2. List B = [b1, b2, ..., bn]
Each element ai and bi in these lists is a string. The goal is to find a sequence of indices (i1, i2, ..., ik)
such that the concatenation of the strings from list A matches the concatenation from list B:
 a_i1 a_i2 ... a_ik = b_i1 b_i2 ... b_ik
Example
Suppose:
 A = [a, aa, aaa]
 B = [aa, a, aaa]
A possible solution is to choose indices [1, 2, 2], producing the following concatenation:
 "a" + "aa" + "aa" = "aa" + "a" + "a"
These two concatenated strings are identical, so this sequence solves the PCP for this example.
Undecidability of PCP
The PCP is undecidable, meaning that there is no general algorithm capable of solving the PCP for
every pair of lists A and B. This undecidability is typically proven by reduction, showing that if PCP
were decidable, other known undecidable problems could also be decided, which leads to a
contradiction.
The PCP is particularly significant because it is frequently used to demonstrate the undecidability of
other problems in computer science, especially in the area of formal languages.

 Recursive and Recursive enumerable languages


Recursive and recursively enumerable languages are two important classes of languages related to
Turing Machines and decidability.
1. Recursive (Decidable) Languages
A language is recursive if there exists a Turing Machine that will always halt (either accept or reject)
on any input string, determining if the string belongs to the language.
 Definition: A language L⊆Σ∗L \subseteq \Sigma^*L⊆Σ∗ is recursive if there exists a Turing
Machine MMM such that:
o If w∈Lw \in Lw∈L, M(w)M(w)M(w) halts and accepts www.
o If w∉Lw \notin Lw∈/L, M(w)M(w)M(w) halts and rejects www.
 Characteristics: Recursive languages are also known as decidable languages because there
exists a Turing Machine that can decide membership in these languages in finite time.
 Examples:
o The language of all strings over {a,b}\{a, b\}{a,b} with an equal number of aaa's and
bbb's.
o Regular languages and context-free languages (such as those recognized by finite
automata and pushdown automata) are also recursive.
Recursive languages are the class of problems where membership can be decided effectively (in finite
time).
2. Recursively Enumerable (Semi-Decidable) Languages
A language is recursively enumerable if there exists a Turing Machine that will halt and accept any
string that belongs to the language, but may run forever for strings that do not belong to the language.
 Definition: A language L⊆Σ∗L \subseteq \Sigma^*L⊆Σ∗ is recursively enumerable if there
exists a Turing Machine MMM such that:
o If w∈Lw \in Lw∈L, M(w)M(w)M(w) halts and accepts www.
o If w∉Lw \notin Lw∈/L, M(w)M(w)M(w) either runs indefinitely or halts and rejects www.
 Characteristics: Recursively enumerable languages are also known as semi-decidable
languages because the Turing Machine may fail to halt on some inputs. However, if a string is in
the language, the Turing Machine will eventually halt and accept it.
 Examples:

Relationship Between Recursive and Recursively Enumerable Languages
 All recursive languages are recursively enumerable, but not all recursively enumerable
languages are recursive.
o If a language is recursive, we can design a TM that decides membership and halts on
every input.
o If a language is recursively enumerable but not recursive, the TM may not halt on all
inputs (but will halt if the input is in the language).
 Example:
o A recursive language, such as simple arithmetic problems with a known solution, has a
Turing Machine that always decides correctly.
o A recursively enumerable but not recursive language, like the Halting Problem, has a
Turing Machine that may halt if the input is in the language but may run forever
otherwise.
In summary:
 Recursive languages (decidable) are those for which a Turing Machine halts on all inputs.
 Recursively enumerable languages (semi-decidable) allow for a Turing Machine that may only

 TM-Halting Problem
The Halting Problem is a fundamental concept in computer science, discovered by Alan Turing,
which states that there is no general algorithm that can determine, for every possible Turing Machine
(TM) and input, whether the TM will eventually halt (stop executing) or continue running indefinitely.
Formal Statement of the Halting Problem
Given a Turing Machine MMM and an input www:
 The goal is to determine if MMM halts when given www as input (i.e., whether it reaches an
accepting or rejecting state in a finite amount of time).
 The halting problem is to decide whether M(w)M(w)M(w) halts.
Proof of the Halting Problem’s Undecidability
Turing proved that there is no Turing Machine HHH that can solve this problem for all possible Turing
Machines and inputs. The proof is typically done by reductio ad absurdum (proof by contradiction):
1. Assume there exists a Turing Machine HHH that can determine if any TM halts on a given input.
2. Construct a new machine DDD that, given a TM MMM as input, uses HHH to check if
M(M)M(M)M(M) halts. If it does, DDD enters an infinite loop; if it doesn’t, DDD halts.
3. Now ask what happens when DDD is given itself as input. This leads to a paradox:
o If D(D)D(D)D(D) halts, then by construction, DDD should enter an infinite loop.
o If D(D)D(D)D(D) loops, then DDD should halt.
4. This contradiction implies that our assumption (that HHH exists) must be false.
This result shows that the halting problem is undecidable: there is no Turing Machine that can
universally decide if another Turing Machine will halt on a given input.
 Decision Properties of Regular Languages
The decision properties of regular languages refer to various questions about regular languages that
can be answered algorithmically. Since regular languages are recognized by finite automata, these
decision properties have efficient solutions and are fundamental in formal language theory and
automata.
Here are the main decision properties of regular languages:
1. Emptiness Testing
o Problem: Determine if a given regular language L is empty (i.e., it contains no strings).
o Solution: This can be done by analyzing the corresponding finite automaton (FA) for L.
 Start from the initial state of the FA and check if there is any path leading to an
accepting (final) state.
 If there is no path from the initial state to any accepting state, the language is empty.

2. Finiteness Testing
o Problem: Determine if a given regular language L is finite (i.e., it contains a finite number of

otherwise, it is not.

4. Equivalence Testing
o Problem: Determine if two regular languages L1 and L2 (represented by two FAs) are
equivalent (i.e., L1 = L2).

information for a single cell position.

3. Non-Deterministic Turing Machine (NDTM)

function.

 Operation: At any point, the NDTM can choose between multiple possible moves. The
machine accepts if any computation path leads to an accepting state.

 Use Case: Useful for problems involving “guessing” solutions, such as combinatorial search or

4. Universal Turing Machine (UTM)

 Structure: A Turing Machine that can simulate any other Turing Machine.

 Use Case: Foundation of general-purpose computation, demonstrating that a single machine

5. Linear Bounded Automaton (LBA)

 Structure: A Turing Machine with a tape bounded by the length of the input (it cannot use
more space than the length of the input).

 Use Case: Recognizes context-sensitive languages, which include languages that cannot be

 Acceptance by PDA
