Exercise #7

Parametric Tests(Correlation and Regression Analysis)

Name:__________________________________Course/Year/Section:___________________

I. Explain Briefly.
1. When, Why, and How do you use Correlation ?
2. When, Why, and How do you use Linear Regression?
3. When, Why, and How do you use Multiple Regression?

II. Solve the following problems using the steps of Testing Hypothesis at 0.05 level of
significance.

(1) Problem
(2) Hypotheses
(3) Level of Significance
(4) Statistics
(5) Decision Rule
(6) Conclusion

1. The following are the scores of ten BSEd students obtained in the final examination in
Science and Math.
Respondents Science Math
1 85 84
2 84 87
3 79 81
4 91 80
5 90 80
6 86 82
7 87 82
8 88 89
9 80 90
10 80 86
Find the value of correlation r and interpret the results at 0.05 level of significance.

2. A study was made by a manager to determine the relationship between the monthly
sales and advertising cost. The following data were recorded.

Months Advertising Cost Sales

(in thousand pesos) (in thousand pesos)
(x) (y)
Jan 5.0 840
Feb 3.6 801
Mar 2.0 812
Apr 1.5 780
May 3.0 820
Jun 1.5 782
Jul 2.6 798
Aug 2.4 789
Sept 2.0 790
Oct 3.0 865
Nov 3.5 850
Dec 4.0 900
a) Find the linear equation which will enable us to predict the average monthly sales
of the company in terms of its advertising cost at 0.05 level of significance.
b) Predict the monthly sales of the company if advertising cost is 6,000.

III. Solve the following problems using SPSS or Excel to conduct statistical analysis at
0.05 level of significance and following the steps of Testing Hypothesis.

1. The following are data on the ages and income of a random sample of 8 working students
and their academic performance. Use  = 0.05.

Age Academic Income

Student (x1) Performance (in thousand pesos)
(x2) (y)
1 28 1.50 15
2 30 2.0 20
3 35 2.25 16
4 26 1.75 18
5 29 1.75 14
6 33 1.25 22
7 31 1.25 25
8 29 1.50 22

a) Find an equation of the form y = b0 + b1x1 + b2x2 of the given data.

b) Use the equation obtained in (a) to estimate the average income of a 37-year old working
student with 1.75 academic performance.
