Assignment Questions

Assignment - I

1. What is resistance switching and derive the expression for the value of resistance to be
inserted to reduce RRRV.

2. Describe the construction and working of an SF6 circuit breaker. What are their
advantages and disadvantages?

3. What is a miniature circuit breaker (MCB), and how are its types differentiated based
on B, C, and D characteristic curves?

4. In a 220 kV system, the reactance and capacitance up to the location of circuit breaker
is 8Ω and 0.025 μF, respectively. A resistance of 600 Ω is connected across the contacts
of the circuit breaker. Determine the following;
(a) Natural frequency of oscillation
(b) Damped frequency of oscillation
(c) Critical value of resistance which will give no transient oscillation

5. The reactance and capacitance upto location of circuit breaker is 3Ω and 0.015μF for a
132kV,50Hz system. Calculate the following
(a) The frequency of transient oscillation
(b) The maximum value of restriking voltage across contacts of circuit breaker.
(c) The maximum value of RRRV.

Assignment – II

1. Describe the construction and operation of induction disc relays. What are the
advantages of using these relays in overcurrent protection?

2. Explain the terms Plug Setting Multiplier (PSM) and Time Multiplier Setting (TMS) in
relays. Provide numerical examples to illustrate their calculation.

3. A differential relay is protecting a transformer with a primary current of 600A and a

secondary current of 580 A. The relay is set with a percentage differential setting of
10%. Calculate the differential current and determine if the relay will operate for this
condition.

4. Explain the universal torque equation and its significance in the operation of distance
relays.

5. A reactance relay is used for protecting a transmission line with a total reactance of 12
Ω. A fault occurs at 75% of the line length. If the relay is set to operate for faults up to
80% of the line length, calculate the reactance at which the relay will operate and
determine whether it will trip for this fault.

1. Explain how the percentage differential protection scheme in transformer protection

differentiates between internal and external faults.
2. Explain the operation and purpose of a Buchholz relay in transformer protection.

3. For a transformer with a primary rating of 1500 kVA and a secondary rating of 400 V,
calculate the required CT ratio for protecting the transformer. Explain the steps
involved in selecting the CT ratio and the impact of incorrect CT ratios on protection
performance.

4. Explain the operation of restricted earth fault protection scheme for earth fault
protection of alternator with a neat diagram.

5. Explain the protection of bus bars by using Differential protection.

fault neutralizer. Determine the reactance to neutralise the capacitance of (i) 100% of
the length of the line, (ii) 90% length of the line, and (iii) 80% of the length of the line.

5. What is an impulse wave and give the specifications of standard impulse test wave?
