on earlier dates.
SET A:
1. An RL circuit has an emf given (in volts) by 2 sin 2t, a resistance of 8 ohms, an
inductance of 0.5 henry, and an initial current of 6 amperes. Find the current in the
circuit at any time t.
2. Find the orthogonal trajectories of the family of curves 𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 = 𝑐𝑥.
3. An RL circuit has an emf given (in volts) by 2 sin t, a resistance of 120 ohms, an
inductance of 2 henries, and no initial current. Find the current at any time t.
4. Find the orthogonal trajectories of the family of curves 𝑦 = 𝑐𝑒 𝑥
5. A thermometer reading 75℉ is taken out where the temperature is 20℉. The reading
4 minutes later is 30℉. Find (a) the thermometer reading 7 minutes after the
thermometer was brought outside and (b) the time taken for the reading to drop from
75℉ to within a half degree of the air temperature.
6. A bacterial population B is known to have a rate of growth proportional to B itself. If
between noon and 2pm the population triples, at what time, no controls being
exerted, should B become 100 times, what it was at noon? At 10 a.m. what
percentage was present?
7. A tank contains 80 gal of pure water. A brine solution with 2 lb/gal of salt enters at
2 gal/min and well-stirred mixture leaves at the same rate. Find the amount of salt
in the tank at any time and (b) the time at which the brine leaving will contain 1 lb/gal
of salt (c) determine the limiting value for the amount of salt in the tank after a long
time. (d) How much time must pass before the amount of salt in the tank reaches
80% of the limiting value.
8. A cup of tea is prepared in a preheated cup with hot water so that the temperature of
both the cup and the brewing tea is initially 190° F. The cup is then left to cool in a
room kept at a constant 72° F. Two minutes later, the temperature of the tea is 150°
F. Determine (a) the temperature of the tea after 5 minutes and (b) the time required
for the tea to reach 100° F.
9. A body weighing 160 Ib is dropped 2000 ft above ground with no initial velocity. As it
falls, the body encounters a force due to air resistance proportional to its velocity. If
the limiting velocity of this body is 320 ft/sec, find (a) an expression for the velocity
of the body at any time t and (b) an expression for the position of the body at any time
t.
10. In a tank are 100 L of brine containing 64 N of dissolved salt. Pure water enters the
tank at a constant rate and the resulting mixture runs out at the same constant rate.
In 5/6 of an hour, the amount of salt is reduced to 16 N. Determine the constant rate
of flow.
