CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

In today’s era, the word artificial intelligence or AI as it is addressed, is a technological

revolution that is taking over all the domains in the world. Be it the software industry or the

production industry, the AI has advanced its root in every aspect. However, being such a

common technology today, the real spirit of this technology is still an abstract to many and it is

important to first understand what artificial intelligence is. Although many definitions exist for

this technology, the simple way to define artificial intelligence is as follows: -

Artificial intelligence (AI), the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot

to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings. The term is frequently applied to

the project of developing systems endowed with the intellectual processes characteristic of

humans, such as the ability to reason, discover meaning, generalize, or learn from past

experience (Copeland, 2023). Since the development of the digital computer in the 1940s, it has

been demonstrated that computers can be programmed to carry out very complex tasks—such as

discovering proofs for mathematical theorems or playing chess—with great proficiency. Still,

despite continuing advances in computer processing speed and memory capacity, there are as yet

no programs that can match full human flexibility over wider domains or in tasks requiring much

everyday knowledge. On the other hand, some programs have attained the performance levels of

human experts and professionals in performing certain specific tasks, so that artificial

intelligence in this limited sense is found in applications as diverse as medical diagnosis,

computer search engines, voice or handwriting recognition, and chatbots (Copeland, 2023). The

lack of development in strong AI ultimately led to what’s called feeble AI, or smearing AI

1
techniques to narrower difficulties. Until the 1980s, AI research was divided between these

two examples. But, around 1980, mechanism learning became a prominent area of research, its

purpose to give computers the ability to learn and build models so that they could perform

activities like prediction within specific domains. Right now, you may be fast-forwarding to the

days when flying cars will have become a reality, but there was also a time when you’d imagine

being a passenger in an autonomous vehicle. Artificial intelligence (and Tesla and Waymo)

translate the real-quick and fascinating concept to reality. However, the potential of AI in the

automotive industry does not begin or end with self-driving cars. It is about many features that

unlock comforts for all: automobile manufacturers, drivers, and passengers. And we shall dig

deeper into how this works.

This seminar form in features the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Automobile and

how it plays a significant role in the automobile industry, revolutionizing various aspects of

vehicle design, manufacturing, operation and user experience

LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Artificial Intelligence in Automobile

Though we are counting on Artificial Intelligence as the subsequent tool to transform the

way we live, work and interrelate with respectively other, which will be typically enabled

by machine-learning methods, it remains indistinct as to how these bright agents will help

to solve complex difficulties than the ones remaining while keeping in attention that the state

of the skill in AI today is to perceptively recognize images and vigorously playing sports. If we

also aspect at the present status WHO is intricate in riding the rollers of progress in Artificial

Intelligence, then some can easily find big initiatives like Google, IBM, Microsoft and

Facebook and are the ones who are big companies in the arena. The development in AI is

likewise transporting stable penalties e.g. eradicating occupations by the means of work

computerization, one such situation can be understood in the Industry 4.0 framework, which is

currently in use in the automobile industry. Industry 4.0 makes what has been named a

‘smart factory’ wherein great number of robots take advancing the whole manufacturing

procedure with the help of cyber-physical schemes, IoT and cloud computing. The current

state of the art in AI research types it more capable in some domains than hominids,

however, it is part of thin artificial Intelligence which is more attentive on a slim domain

of difficulties e.g. iPhone Siri. In 2015, numerous milestones attained in the research and

growth of AI provided rise to Artificial General Intelligence and this thoughtful of AI

can be pragmatic all kind of difficulties. In cognitive science, intelligence is definite in many

3
ways which comprise one’s capacity for cognitive, logic, considerate, planning, problematic

resolving, self-awareness, and passionate awareness etc. A Human-level intelligent mechanism

should have an ability to pass several tests; one of such examinations is the Turing test.

However, there is no perfect test which can prove a mechanism perfectly human -level

intellectual. If we guise at the present state of AI, the step of evolution of false intelligence is

speeding up. NIPS (Neural Information Processing Network) session is one of the maximum

famous sessions in the arena of Machine Learning & computational neuroscience( Pujari et al,

2021).

2.2 Applications of AI in the automotive industry

Figure 1: Application of AI in the automotive industry

Design and manufacturing

4
AI-powered solutions and ML algorithms help vehicle manufacturers improve production

processes, speed up data classification during risk assessments and vehicle damage evaluations,

and do many other things. AI systems and robotics solutions relying on such technologies as

computer vision, natural language processing, and conversational interfaces are widely applied in

vehicle manufacturing.

Examples

a) Nvidia’s Quadro RTX graphics card [PDF] uses AI to significantly accelerate design

workflows.

b) Rethink Robotics makes collaborative robots for performing tedious tasks like handling

heavy materials and inspecting produced parts.

Supply chain

It’s vital for vehicle manufacturers to be able to monitor every stage of a component’s journey

and know exactly when to expect its arrival at the destination plant. That’s why modern supply

chains often rely on cutting-edge IoT, blockchain, and AI technologies. In particular, vehicle

manufacturers can turn to solutions relying on different machine learning algorithms and AI-

powered predictive analytics. With their help, manufacturers can estimate demand for

components and predict possible changes in demand in a timely manner.

Example

Blue Yonder leverages AI technologies to increase inventory movement visibility and enable

manufacturers to predict possible delivery disruptions.

5
Quality control

AI can enable timely detection of various technical issues. Based on data gathered by in-vehicle

sensors, an AI system can inform a user that a certain component or system requires maintenance

or needs to be replaced as early as the need arises. Manufacturers also use AI-powered quality

control systems to detect possible flaws in parts before they get installed.

In-car quality control systems mostly rely on data processing and analysis methods, while

solutions used in manufacturing leverage image recognition and sound processing AI solutions.

Examples

a) BMW uses AI-powered solutions for predictive maintenance of welding tongs and

paintwork quality analysis, among other tasks.

b) Predii’s AI-based platform prescribes vehicle repairs based on analysis of sensor data.

Passenger experience

To make sure all passengers are safe and satisfied, manufacturers enhance their vehicles with all

kinds of AI-powered applications meant to upgrade the passenger experience. Some systems use

face recognition and emotion recognition methods to evaluate the state of the driver and

passengers. Others deploy natural language processing and natural language generation methods

to enable passengers to watch movies, listen to music, and even order goods and services while

on the road.

Example

Dentsu and Hyundai invested $10 million in the Audioburst project to create an AI-powered

infotainment system. Using automatic speech recognition and natural language understanding,

6
this system will enable passengers to search music/audio libraries, enjoy personalized music

playlists and news briefs, and so on.

Driver assistance

As for driving experience, AI systems are meant to assist drivers and ensure safety by warning

them about traffic and weather changes, offering the most efficient routes, or paying for goods

and services on the go.

Examples

CarVi is an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) that uses AI capabilities to analyze traffic

data. It also notifies drivers in real time about possible dangers like driving conditions, lane

departure, and forward collisions. Such solutions rely heavily on real-time image and video

recognition, object detection, and action detection, but may also use speech recognition and

natural language processing technologies.

Automotive insurance

AI-powered solutions have great potential in handling insurance claims. On the driver’s side, in-

vehicle AI capabilities can be used for gathering incident data and filling out claims. Such a

system would need to combine smart data analytics, speech recognition, natural language

processing, and text processing and generation.

7
Examples

a) On the insurance provider’s side, AI systems leveraging image processing and object

detection technologies can be of great help for improving the accuracy of vehicle damage

analysis.

b) The Ping An Auto Owner application uses AI capabilities to assess photos uploaded by

users making insurance claims.

2.2.1 Need for Artificial Intelligence in Automobile

In today’s tech-savvy world, people want their vehicles to be as smart as their phones or

computers. Thanks to artificial intelligence for bringing our vision of smart vehicles to reality!

While the impact of AI is considerable in almost every business sector, AI in the automotive

industry is immensely powerful. Starting from industrial robots at production factories to self-

driving vehicles, AI has transformed the automotive industry in various ways. It is why

Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Volkswagen, Tesla, Volvo, Bosch, and many other large industry

players are proactively adopting AI technology to improve the customer experience.

Accordingly, automotive manufacturers are increasingly embracing advanced AI-based

software development solutions to realize the vision of automated vehicles. The result is an

industry that counts on AI in the design and manufacturing of vehicles, making it obvious that

hybrid cars, electric cars, and autonomous cars are the future of the automotive industry.

2.2.2 AI ALGORITHM USED FOR AUTOMOBILE

1. Regression Algorithms

8
This type of algorithm is good at predicting events. Regression analysis estimates the

relationship between two or more variables, compare the effects of variables measured on

different scales and are mostly driven by three metrics, namely:

a. The number of independent variables

b. The type of dependent variables

c. The shape of the regression line.

In ADAS, images (radar or camera) play a very important role in localization and actuation,

while the biggest challenge for any algorithm is to develop an image-based model for prediction

and feature selection. Regression algorithms leverage the repeatability of the environment to

create a statistical model of the relation between an image and the position of a given object in

that image. The statistical model can be learned offline and provides fast online detection by

allowing image sampling. Furthermore, it can be extended to other objects without requiring

extensive human modeling. As an output to the online stage, the algorithm returns an object

position and a confidence on the presence of the object. These algorithms can also be used for

long learning, short prediction. The type of regression algorithms that can be used for self-

driving cars are Bayesian regression, neural network regression and decision forest regression,

among others.

2. Pattern Recognition Algorithms (Classification)

In ADAS, the images obtained through sensors possess all types of environmental data; filtering

of the images is required to recognize instances of an object category by ruling out the irrelevant

data points. Pattern recognition algorithms are good at ruling out these unusual data points.

Recognition of patterns in a data set is an important step before classifying the objects. These

9
types of algorithms can also be defined as data reduction algorithms. These algorithms help in

reducing the data set by detecting object edges and fitting line segments (polylines) and circular

arcs to the edges. Line segments are aligned to edges up to a corner, then a new line segment is

started. Circular arcs are fit to sequences of line segments that approximate an arc. The image

features (line segments and circular arcs) are combined in various ways to form the features that

are used for recognizing an object. The support vector machines (SVM) with histograms of

oriented gradients (HOG) and principle component analysis (PCA) are the most common

recognition algorithms used in ADAS. The Bayes decision rule and K nearest neighbor (KNN)

are also used.

3. Clustering

Sometimes the images obtained by the system are not clear and it is difficult to detect and locate

objects. It is also possible that the classification algorithms may miss the object and fail to

classify and report it to the system. The reason could be low-resolution images, very few data

points or discontinuous data. This type of algorithm is good at discovering structure from data

points. Like regression, it describes the class of problem and the class of methods. Clustering

methods are typically organized by modeling approaches such as centroid-based and

hierarchical. All methods are concerned with using the inherent structures in the data to best

organize the data into groups of maximum commonality. The most commonly used type of

algorithm is K-means, Multi-class Neura

4. Decision Matrix Algorithms

This type of algorithm is good at systematically identifying, analyzing, and rating the

performance of relationships between sets of values and information. These algorithms are

10
mainly used for decision making. Whether a car needs to take a left turn or it needs to brake

depends on the level of confidence the algorithms have on the classification, recognition and

prediction of the next movement of objects. These algorithms are models composed of multiple

decision models independently trained and whose predictions are combined in some way to

make the overall prediction, while reducing the possibility of errors in decision making. The

most commonly used algorithms are gradient boosting (GDM) and AdaBoosting.l Network.

2.1.2 Role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Automobile

Artificial intelligence is pleasing the automobile manufacturing by rainstorm while all the

major automobile companies are using their resources and knowledge to come up with the

finest. In the similar way, when intellect is applied to the knowledge within an automobile,

it would distinguish the atmosphere and evaluate the appropriate suggestions when it traffics or

appearances any hurdles. In (2015), the connect rate of Artificial Intelligence(AI) based

systems in fresh vehicles was just 8%; this amount is expected to soar to 109% in (2030). This

is since different types of Artificial Intelligence(AI) systems will be installed in vehicles.

1. Autonomous Driving

AI and ML algorithms are powering autonomous vehicles, which are capable of driving

themselves without human intervention. These algorithms can recognize objects in the

environment, predict their movements, and make decisions about how to navigate safely. The

path toward self-driving cars began with incremental automation features for safety and

convenience before the year 2000, with cruise control and antilock brakes. After the turn of the

millennium, advanced safety features, including electronic stability control, blind-spot detection,

and collision and lane shift warnings, became available in vehicles. Between 2010 and 2016,

advanced driver assistance capabilities, such as rearview video cameras, automatic emergency

brakes and lane-centering assistance, emerged according to NHTSA. Since 2016, self-driving

cars have moved toward partial autonomy, with features that help drivers stay in their lane, along

with ACC technology and the ability to self-park. Fully automated vehicles are not publicly

15
available yet and may not be for many years. In the U.S., NHTSA provides federal guidance for

introducing a new ADS onto public roads. As autonomous car technologies advance, so will the

department's guidance. Self-driving cars are not yet legal on most roads. In June 2011, Nevada

became the first jurisdiction in the world to allow driverless cars to be tested on public roadways;

California, Florida, Ohio and Washington, D.C., have followed in the years since The history of

driverless cars goes back much further than that. (Leonardo da Vinci designed the first prototype

around 1478). Da Vinci's car was designed as a self-propelled robot powered by springs, with

programmable steering and the ability to run preset courses

How does Autonomous Driving work

16
AI technologies power self-driving car systems. Developers of self-driving cars use vast amounts

of data from image recognition systems, along with machine learning and neural networks, to

build systems that can drive autonomously. The neural networks identify patterns in the data,

which are fed to the machine learning algorithms. That data includes images from cameras on

self-driving cars from which the neural network learns to identify traffic lights, trees, curbs,

pedestrians, street signs and other parts of any given driving environment. For example, Google's

self-driving car project, called Waymo, uses a mix of sensors, lidar (light detection and ranging

-- a technology similar to RADAR) and cameras and combines all of the data those systems

generate to identify everything around the vehicle and predict what those objects might do next.

This happens in fractions of a second. Maturity is important for these systems. The more the

system drives, the more data it can incorporate into its deep learning algorithms, enabling it to

make more nuanced driving choices.

Figure 7: Autonomous Vehicle

2. Predictive Maintenance

17
Predictive maintenance continuously analyzes the condition of connected assets and equipment.

It can collect multiple types of data to build detailed models that reflect equipment status, and

how that equipment is being used. This way, data produced during the machine’s normal

operations is analyzed and to propose much more accurate maintenance recommendations. This

data is analyzed to reduce the probability of failures, and provides a richer understanding of the

causes, likelihood, and time-to-failure if an asset remains without service. Unlike preventative

maintenance, which consists of blanket rules, predictive maintenance delivers accurate and

specific recommendations that reflect your equipment and how you’re using it. This accuracy

also prevents unnecessary maintenance activities that can incur costs and downtime. By applying

the transformative combination of IIoT and AI to build very robust predictive maintenance data

models, organizations are experiencing decreased downtime, greater work productivity, reduced

field service costs, improved product design, and heightened worker safety. By analyzing data

from sensors and other sources, AI and ML algorithms can predict when a vehicle is likely to

require maintenance. This can help prevent breakdowns and reduce the cost of repairs.

3. AI Personalization

Personalization means customizing a product or service to accommodate an individual or group

of people. Personalization can be a way to meet the customer’s needs and enhance the

experience.

Before now, personalization in the automotive industry has been limited to things like

accessories. In the past, car personalization has been either stylistic or functional. Things like

new car rims would be stylistic and something like a bike rack or tow hitch would be functional.

But now, AI is taking car personalization to the next level. In the not-so-distant future, with the

help of AI, our cars will not only reflect our personalities, they will have the ability to adapt to

18
them as well. AI and ML algorithms can analyze data about a driver's behavior and preferences,

such as their preferred route, music, and temperature settings, to create a personalized driving

experience. Examples we can already observe today include internet capability or an engine

calibrated for fuel efficiency or general performance. In the future, each car could reflect the

needs of the driver and their specific ecosystem. For example, a vehicle could change the way its

engine and transmission operate based on the terrain. Overall, these developments could make

cars better machines that more effectively serve the driver in their environment. By analyzing

data, a vehicle could adjust to guarantee a fully optimized driving experience, personalized to the

road.

In general, the option for personalization will shift the market away from a one-size-fits-all

model though. Rather, a software-driven personalized automotive experience is on the horizon.

Think of the future of automobile personalization like the progression of the smartphone. Just 10

years ago, Apple released the first iPhone in 2007. Today, 77 percent of Americans own some

kind of smartphone. These gadgets, capable of adapting to our lives entirely, can help us keep up

with friends, schedule appointments, remember meetings and classes, make calls, and display

unique personalities. In the future, our automobiles could do all the same things.

4. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

ADAS features, such as lane departure warnings and adaptive cruise control, are powered by AI

and ML algorithms that can analyze data from sensors and cameras to detect potential hazards

and adjust the vehicle's behavior accordingly. ADAS are technologies used to make motor

vehicle travel safer by automating, improving or adapting some or all of the tasks involved in

operating a vehicle. Driver assistance serves to make travel comfortable and easier, while also

increasing car and road safety. While some systems help with the task of driving, others alert the

19
driver to errors or hazards, such as lane departure detection and drowsiness detection. Aside from

vehicle control, driver assistance can also refer to secondary driving tasks such as location

finding, route planning and obstacle detection. Driver assistance involves both simple systems

such as anti-lock braking and complex systems like the fully autonomous hardware and software

operating a driverless car. More complex systems that take control of the car include

technologies such as machine vision, artificial intelligence (AI), radar, lasers and various

position-detecting technologies. Although relatively few corporations are occupied on fully-

automated replicas, a growing amount of builders are facilitation in that way. By

presenting features that assist the motorist without captivating the wheel, many businesses

are taking a cautious method to AI-based features, while still rotating out vehicles with

progressive safety features. Involuntary braking, crash avoidance systems, ordinary and

cyclists’ alerts, cross-traffic warnings, and intelligent cruise panels are some of the smaller

features being motorized by AI. The willingness of automobile manufacturers to grow

automated cars, transmission trucks, and other automobiles opens an affluence of new

opportunities.

20
Figure 8: Advanced driver assistance vehicle

5. Supply Chain Management

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the manufacturing and supply chain industry,

providing companies with new opportunities to optimize their operations, improve efficiency,

and reduce costs. From predictive maintenance to demand forecasting and quality control, AI is

transforming the way we think about production and logistics. In this article, we'll explore some

examples of how AI is being used in manufacturing and supply chain and the benefits it

provides.

 Predictive Maintenance: AI is being used to predict equipment failures and maintenance

needs before they occur, reducing downtime and costs. For example, Schneider Electric

used AI to predict when their equipment would fail, reducing maintenance costs by 25%

and unplanned downtime by 20% [1].

 Quality Control: AI is being used to automate quality control processes, ensuring that

products meet specifications and reducing the risk of defects. For example, BMW uses

AI-powered vision systems to detect defects in car parts, reducing the number of faulty

parts that are shipped to customers [2].

 Demand Forecasting: AI is being used to predict customer demand more accurately,

enabling companies to optimize production and reduce inventory costs. For example,

Unilever uses AI to forecast demand for their products, reducing inventory costs by 15%

and improving customer service levels [3].

 Supply Chain Optimization: AI is being used to optimize supply chain operations,

reducing transportation costs and improving delivery times. For example, Maersk uses AI

to optimize their shipping routes, reducing fuel consumption by 10-15% [4].

21
These are just a few examples of how AI is being used in manufacturing and supply chain to

optimize operations, reduce costs, and improve customer satisfaction. As AI technology

continues to evolve, we can expect to see even greater innovation and disruption in the industry.

6. Intelligent Infotainment System

Imagine a journey where your vehicle effortlessly responds to your voice commands, tailoring

music selections, automatically adjusting the temperature, and suggesting optimized routes. A

decade ago, this may have sounded like a scene from a science fiction novel, but today, it is a

reality thanks to the power of artificial intelligence (AI). Artificial Intelligence has become an

integral part of modern technology, making a remarkable impact on various industries. One

sector that has been experiencing significant transformation due to AI’s advancements is the

automotive industry. With the rise of digital technology and artificial intelligence, automotive

infotainment systems are evolving rapidly, becoming more intuitive, personalized, and safer.

From basic car radios and CD players to today’s sophisticated, connected systems, in-vehicle

infotainment has become an essential part of modern driving experiences. In this blog post, we

CHAPTER THREE

PROSPECTS AND CHALLENGES

3.1 Prospects

Automotive industry is one of the biggest investors in AI. It is driving a profound transformation

in the future of the automobile industry. Automotive industry players are using the power of

machine learning algorithms to refine the quality of data crucial for autonomous driving systems.

This ensures that self-driving vehicles can operate with greater precision and safety. AI is

helping automotive industry in opening new doors with its machine learning and automation.

The automotive industry is slowly leaning towards being eco-friendly, and with the help of AI

25
technology, companies are manufacturing electric cars. AI in automotive industry is

transforming the future of automotive industry, and these current trends will showcase on what

scale it is changing. Furthermore, AI is playing a pivotal role in enhancing driver convenience

and safety. Features like automatic braking and blind-spot detection, empowered by AI, are

becoming commonplace. These advancements not only make driving more convenient but also

significantly reduce the risk of accidents. As AI continues to evolve, it promises a future where

automobiles are not only smarter but also safer and more efficient.

i. 5G a New Partner For AI

5g is one of the newest innovations on the internet. The connectivity that 5g promises can help

automation industry manufacture cars that will help build a digital bridge. While commuting, 5g

can connect devices and people. With the combination of AI, the Internet can provide a better

driving experience to the customers. Our entertainment system can become a proper informant

system that will work on drivers’ commands. Instead of just using the car system for listening to

music or taking hands free call, a driver can get more technical information about how a car is

performing and how much oil is left with just his or her voice.

ii. AI in Automotive Operations.

AI can provide automation changes to the manufacturing process. It can impact the sales and

selling process by providing the salesperson with data like customers’ journeys of potential

clients. This will help sales person optimize their overall sale process and conversation.

Conversion rates and costs can be reduced if properly integrated the AI in the operations.

iii. Enhancement of Safety

26
Road trips and commutes are filled with road hazards and potential threats. AI’s advanced

machine learning system helps companies in the automotive industry build cars that can detect

traffic behavior. This can help drivers predict potential danger and guide them to safety.

iv. Exceeding Limitations

Companies recognize that AI can bring big innovative changes to their automotive industry.

Many designs, body parts, and engines are now developed through the different suggestions of

Artificial Intelligence systems. AI in manufacturing has brought new ways that were not

expected to be found in the past. The possibilities that what automotive industries think is their

limit right now will be exceeded through AI in the future.

v. Personalized Vehicle Experience

Driving a car can be a way of self-expression. AI in automobile with its capabilities, can provide

something similar to this, and many big automotive companies like Porsche are providing

something called a “Recommendation Engine.” This machine learning can suggest vehicle

packages according to the preferences of individual drivers.

3.2 Challenges

 Security

Increased connectivity leveraged by recent automobiles for features like V2X opens door

for hacking underlying vulnerabilities. Hackers can compromise AI systems with actions

like making vehicle misinterpret a stop sign which may disrupt safety-critical functions.

The architecture and products should be evaluated deeply with the help of established

27
standards like ISO21434 along with provisions like firewalls, intrusion detection systems.

Steps to be taken to make the AI models used in vehicle robust against AI attacks.

 Data privacy

AI requires personal/sensitive data to train models, for instance location, route data and

destination with additional information needed to personalize and enhance navigation

features. Hackers can access a driver or passenger’s personal information, leading to

identity theft and misuse of personal information. Minimal collection and retention of data

as mandatory for operation to be ensured and data shall be used only as informed to user.

Before using data for training generative AI, personal information should be deidentified to

ensure individuals cannot be identified from generated outputs. Individuals should have

granular control over what data they share and generate. If individuals wish to opt out of

sharing their personal data through an AI system, it should be easy for them to manage

their data.

 Biometric privacy

Technologies such as fingerprint readers, facial scanners, iris scans, and voice recognition

collect and use biometric data to improve a driver’s in-vehicle experience. Companies that

collect this data must comply with privacy and data protection regulations to keep data

private and secure.

 Regulations, litigations and ethical considerations

The vehicles should comply to the identified regulations like for eg: NHTSA in US. This

topics like lack of ‘human like decision making’ in autonomous systems, ethical and

judgmental dilemmas are discussed for long. Autonomous vehicles are not “programmed”

28
by humans to mimic human decision-making. Instead, they learn from large datasets to

perform tasks like “traffic sign recognition” using complex algorithms distilled from data.

The “Trolley” problem is a typical ethical dilemma where an onlooker can save five lives

from a rogue trolley by diverting it to kill just one person. This illustrates why making

decisions about who lives and dies are inherently moral judgments but with generative AI

-- are we now relegating these moral judgments to artificial intelligence that doesn’t have

human feeling? AI and human perceptions differ resulting in different kinds of mistakes.

As in the pedestrian death caused by a self-driving Uber car, AI can misidentify hazards.

How will an autonomous vehicle rationally choose a behavior model in an inevitable
