The Aztecs: Daily Life

Read the following texts and answer the questions:

Family Life
Family was important to the Aztecs. The husband worked outside the
home as a farmer, soldier, or craftsman. The wife, who worked at
home, cooked food for the family and made their clothes. The
children went to school and helped in the house.
What type of homes did they live in?
The emperor lived in a large palace which had many rooms and
gardens. All of the rich people had a room that was like a sauna, and
they washed in there. Bathing was an important part of the Aztec
daily life.
Poor people used to live in small huts with one or two rooms. When
they were building the huts, they made the roofs with the leaves of
palm trees. They had gardens near their homes and they grew
vegetables and flowers there. Inside the house, there were three
main areas for sleeping, cooking and eating.

What did the Aztecs wear for clothes?


The Aztec men wore long capes. The women wore long skirts and
blouses
There used to be laws about the decorations and the colour of
clothes that people could wear. For example, only the rich could
wear clothes with feather decorations and only the emperor could
wear a turquoise-coloured cloak.
What did they eat?
The Aztecs ate three main foods – maize, beans pumpkins. They
also ate insects, fish, honey, sheep and snakes. The food they liked
the most was the cacao bean. They used it to make chocolate.
Games
The Aztecs enjoyed games. One of the most popular was
Ullamalitzli. This was a game that they played with a rubber ball on
a court. The players passed the ball with only their hips, shoulders,
heads and knees.
