WorkSheet 3 Conversion Factors I NEW 2022 KEY
Conversion Factors-I
Units can be converted into other units of the same physical quantity.
For example, millimetres can be converted into kilometres or centimetres, but not
into kilograms.
Write the equivalence between the unit that you have (in the example:
hours) and the unit that you want to have (in the example: minutes) and transform it
into a conversion factor (a conversion factor is a quotient in which the numerator is
equivalent to the denominator).
Equivalence: 60 min 1h
Conversion factor: or
1 h = 60 min 1h 60 min
Write the quantity and the unit given in the exercise and multiply it by
the conversion factor.
New unit
.
60 min 3.5 . 60 min
3.5 h = = 210 min
1h 1
You have to use the same number of conversion factors as the number of
units you need to convert (the same number of equivalences written).
l
Another example: we have to convert 346 Gl into ml
New unit
Equivalences:
109 l 1 ml 346·109·1 ml
1 Gl = 10 9 l 346Gl. · -3 = =346·109-(-3)ml =346·1012 ml
1 Gl 10 l 1·10 -3
10 -3 l = 1 ml
