MEC201:SOLID MECHANICS

Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: describe the fundamental concepts of mechanics of deformable solids in one dimensional
framework

CO2 :: examine the two dimensional elements under stresses for combined loads

CO3 :: analyze the probable failures for the shafts subjected to torsional loading

CO4 :: draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the given beam

CO5 :: analyze the beam slope and deflection under different loading conditions

CO6 :: calculate buckling load for long and short columns with different end joints

Unit I
Simple stresses and strains : Concept of stress and strain, St. Venant's principle, Stress-strain
diagram, Engineering stress and true stress, Hooke's law, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, Isotropic
anisotropic and orthotropic material, Stress at a point, Stresses and strains in bars subjected to axial
loading, Modulus of rigidity, Stresses produced in compound bars subjected to axial loading,
Relationships between elastic constants, Thermal stresses and strains, Strain energy
Unit II
Compound stresses and strains with thin cylinders and spheres : Two dimensional stress-
strain system, Stress at a point on a plane, Principal stresses and principal planes, Mohr's circle of
stresses, Hoop's stresses in thin cylinder, Longitudinal stresses in thin cylinder, Sphere subjected to
internal pressures
Unit III
TORSION : Derivation of torsional equation and its assumptions, Applications of the equation to
hollow and solid circular shafts, Torsional rigidity, Combined torsion and bending of circular shafts,
Principal stresses and maximum shear stresses under combined loading of bending and torsion
Unit IV
Shear force and bending moment diagrams : BM and SF diagrams for cantilevers and simply
supported beams with or without overhangs, Calculation of maximum BM and SF and the point of
contra-flexure under concentrated loads, Uniformly distributed loads over the whole span or part of
span, Combination of concentrated loads and uniformly distributed loads, Uniformly varying loads,
Application of moments
Unit V
Bending stresses, Slope and Deflection in beams : Assumptions in the simple bending theory,
Derivation of bending equation, Application of bending equation to beams of rectangular sections,
Stresses in curved beam due to bending moment, Relationship between moment, slope and
deflection, Macaulay's method, Moment area method, Calculation of slope and deflection for
determinant beams
Unit VI
Columns and struts : Columns under uni-axial load, Buckling of Columns, Slenderness ratio and
conditions, Derivation of Euler's formula for elastic buckling load, Equivalent length, Rankine Gordon's
empirical formula, Eccentric loading
