1. Consider a 1.70-m-tall man standing vertically in the water and completely submerged in a
pool. Determine the difference between the pressures acting at the head and at the toes of this
man, in kPa. (Consider the depth between the top of the head of the man and the free surface
of the water negligible) (1 mark)
a. 15.45 kPa
b. 16.97 kPa
c. 16.67 kPa
d. 15.45 kPa

Sol 1: Pressure and height relationship in the static water = ρ×g×h

The difference between the pressures acting at the head and at the toes of this man= ρ×g×
(difference between head and toes)
At the toes = 1000×9.81×(1.70-0) = 16677 Pa = 16.677kPa

2. Which of the following assumption is incorrect in the derivation of the Bernoulli’s

Determine if this main can serve water to neighbourhoods that are 28 m above this location. (1
mark)
a. Yes
b. No

Sol 2: No, because

270 kPa pressure has the capacity to reach upto (P (270000) = ρ×g×h = 1000×9.81× h) 27.5 m.

4. The difference in mercury level (density of mercury = 13,600kg/m3) of a pitot static tube

a. 6.821 m/s.
b. 7. 32 m/s.
Assignment No. 5 Fluid Mechanics
c. 7.55 m/s.
d. 9.81 m/s.

5. A 150 mm diameter jet of water is discharged from a nozzle into the air at a velocity of 36
m/s. What is the total head value with respect to datum at the ground level if the jet is located
2.5 m above the ground level? (1 mark)
a. 66.055 m.
b. 68.555 m.
c. 63.555 m.
Assignment No. 5 Fluid Mechanics
d. 65.555 m.

b. Lowered, increases.
c. Recovered, decreases.
d. Increases, recovered.

7. A liquid of specific gravity 1.3 flows in a pipe at a rate of 800 l/s. From point 1 to point 2
which is 1 m above point 1. The diameters at section 1 and 2 are 0.6 m and 0.3 m respectively.
If the pressure at section 1 is 10 bar, determine the pressure at section 2? (1mark)
a. 9.092 bar.
b. 10. 112 bar.
Assignment No. 5 Fluid Mechanics
c. 8.092 bar.
d. 11.112 bar.

8. The maximum blood pressure in the upper arm of a healthy person is about 120 mmHg
(gauge pressure). If a vertical tube (empty) open to the atmosphere is connected to the vein in
Assignment No. 5 Fluid Mechanics
the arm of the person, determine how high the blood will rise in the tube. Take the density of
the blood to be 1020 kg/m3. (2 marks)

a. 1.20 m
b. 1.80 m
c. 1.57 m
d. 1.60 m

Sol 3: Maximum blood gauge pressure = 120 mmHg (means 120 mm height in a mercury tube)
= ρ×g×h
(13600×9.81×120)/1000 = 16010 Pa (16010 Pa pressure, when Hg is used in the tube)
Now, when a vertically empty tube open to the atmosphere is connected to the vein, then how
much height will gain by the vein blood (1020 kg/m3) with 16010 Pa?
P=ρ×g×h
16010= 1020×9.81×h
h=1.6m

9. A metal plate 1.25 m × 1.25 m × 6 mm thick and weighing 90 N is placed midway in the
24 mm gap between the two vertical plane surfaces. The gap is filled with an oil of specific
gravity 0.85 and dynamic viscosity 3.0 N.s/m2. Determine the velocity at which the central
plate will move (m/s) (3 marks)
a. 0.3
b. 0.4
c. 0.15
d. 0.8
Assignment No. 5 Fluid Mechanics

Thickness of gap on each side = 0.5 x (24-6) = 9 mm

Applying Newton’s law of viscosity,

90 𝑢 𝑢
= 3× −3
+3×
1.5625 9 × 10 9 × 10−3

=> 𝑢 = 0.15 𝑚/𝑠

10. Underground water is to be pumped by a 70 percent efficient 5-kW submerged pump to a

inlet Velocity (v) =Q/inlet area = 0.0119/(π/4)*0.07^2 =3.09 m/s
exit Velocity (v)= Q/outlet area = 0.0119/(π/4)*0.05^2 = 6.06 m/s

By momentum equation in X-direction:
0 − 𝑅𝑥 = 𝜌𝑄(𝑉𝑐𝑜𝑠45° − 𝑉)
𝑅𝑥 = 595𝑁

R= √𝑅𝑥 2 + 𝑅𝑦 2
