Lesson: PIE GRAPH

Learning Competency:
 Construct pie/circle graphs to organize, present, and analyze data from everyday life
situations showing, e.g.: • daily/weekly
LS3CMP-SP-PSF- JHS-12 /ALS K to 12 BEC CG 2019, p. 165

When we look for information to help us make important decisions, we often find
the information in the form of graphs. A lot of newspapers regularly use graphs to
help readers to compare amounts or see trends. One of these graphs is a pie graph.

At the end of the module, you should be able to:

 Identifies the steps in constructing a pie graph and interprets its data.

1
 Constructs a pie graph based on a given set of data.
 Be accurate in constructing a pie graph.

Let’s think about

this
Directions: Write the letter of the answer that matches the problem.

1. Some students participate in a favorite colors poll. The results

are shown below in the pie graph.

Pre-
Test
Directions: Use the graph to answer the following:

3
Let’s see what you already know

Directions: A group of students ask about their favorite sport and made a pie graph of the
findings. Use the information to answer the questions.

1. What percentage of the students like football?

a. 25% b. 30% c. 35% d. 40%

2. How many students prefer swimming?

a. 100 b. 120 c. 130 d. 140

3. How many students do not like volleyball the most?

a. 140 b. 240 c. 340 d. 440

4. How many students were asked about their favorite sport?

a. 400 b. 300 c. 200 d. 100

Let’s
learn
Graph- can be defined as a pictorial representation
or a diagram that represents data or values in an
organized manner. The points on the graph often
represent the relationship between two or more
things.

A circle graph/pie -chart is a way of

summarizing a set of categorical data or
displaying the different values of a given
variable (e.g., percentage distribution). This
type of chart is a circle divided into a series
of segments. Each segment represents a
particular category. The area of each
segment is the same proportion of a circle as
the category is of the total data set.

A circle/pie graph is used to show the

relation of the parts to the whole and to each
other. It is divided into sectors of varying
sizes representing varying categories. The
entire circle is one whole or 100%, and a
sector of a circle is a part.

Circle graphs/pie charts usually show the component parts of a whole. Often you will see a
segment of the drawing separated from the rest of the pie in order to emphasize an important
piece of information.

5
1. Do you know the weekly expenses of your family?
2. How much does your family spend for food? Light and water? Transportation?
3. What is more important, spending for your needs or spending for your wants?
4. Why is it good to be thrifty?

Constructing a Pie Graph

To construct a pie/circle graph, we proceed as follows:

6
Step 4: Construct the Circle Graph and plot the data using Compass and Protractor.

7
Step 5: Write the title of the graph.
Weekly Expenses of Santos Family

Interpreting a Pie Graph

To interpret pie graph, you should understand percentages.

Pie graphs often label each segment with percentages.

Importance of Using Pie or Circle Graph

The use of the circle graph/pie chart is quite popular, as the circle provides a visual concept
of the whole (100%). Circle graphs/pie charts are also one of the most commonly used charts
because they are simple to use. Despite its popularity, circle graphs/pie charts should be used
sparingly for two reasons.

First, they are best used for displaying statistical information when there are no more than six
components only—otherwise, the resulting picture will be too complex to understand.

8
Second, circle graphs/pie charts are not useful when the values of each component are similar
because it is difficult to see the differences between slice sizes.

Let’s Do This!

Do the following exercise below:

Directions: Construct a pie graph using the given data of the rate on the CoVid-19 positive
cases of Negros Oriental’s 2 nd Congressional District. Do this by using a colored construction
paper and a folder.
