WEEKLY LESSON PLAN


CHRISTMAS TERM
Subject: Scripture
Week: 2
Date: Monday 16 – Friday 20 September, 2024.
Class: Year 6
TOPIC: Paul’s Early Life.
Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students should be able to do the following:
 Narrate a short story of Paul’s early life,
 State original name, nationality, religion and place of birth.

MATERIALS NEEDED: Bible, images of Tarsus and Paul, Mind-Map

PROCEDURE
 The teacher welcomes the pupils.
Starter
Begin by asking students if they know who Paul the Apostle was and why he is
significant in Christian history.
Step 1- Explain that today, they will learn about the early life of Paul, who was
originally known by a different name.
Step 2- Explain that Paul was originally named Saul.
Step 3- Discuss his birth in Tarsus, a city in modern-day Turkey, which was then part
of the Roman Empire.
Step 4 - Mention that Paul was a Roman citizen by birth, which was a significant
status.
Explain that Paul was Jewish and that his family strictly followed Jewish
customs.
Religion and Upbringing: emphasize that before his conversion, Paul was a
Pharisee and was very zealous in his adherence to Jewish law.
Step 5- Divide students into small groups and give each group a short passage from
the Bible (Acts 7:58-8:1 and Acts 22:3) that discusses Paul’s early life.
Step 6- Have each group read the passage and then retell the story in their own
words, focusing on Paul’s early life, his original name, nationality, religion, and place
of birth.
Step 7 – Using Mind mapping, review the key points discussed in the lesson: Paul’s
original name (Saul), his nationality (Roman citizen), his religion (Jewish), and his
place of birth (Tarsus).
Step 8 - Children look up the meanings of the keywords mentioned at the end of the
lesson.
 The teacher concludes the lesson.
 The teacher allows children to ask questions.

AGE: 10- 11 years

CONTROL OF ERROR: Teacher-directed.


GROUP OR INDIVIDUAL EXERCISE: Group - Have students write down one fact
they found interesting about Paul’s early life.
Pupils copy their notes.

PAUL’S EARLY LIFE

1. Paul was originally known as Saul.

2. Paul was born in Tarsus in Cilicia, a city in the Roman Empire, which is in

modern-day Turkey.

3. Saul was a Roman citizen by birth. This was an important status that provided

certain privileges in the Roman Empire.

4. Paul was also Jewish because his parents were Israelites. He was raised in a

strict Jewish household and followed Jewish customs carefully.

5. He was a Jew (Hebrew), and a Roman by nationality.

6. He grew up learning both the Jewish law and the Greek ways of discussing

things.

7. When the Christian movement began, after the death of Jesus Christ, he was

strongly against it.

8. He worked for the Roman Government and helped lead the arrest and killings

of Christians.
