Read the text carefully then do the following activities.
Advertisers spend billions of dollars a year worldwide encouraging and manipulating
people into a consumer lifestyle with devastating impacts on the environment. Advertising
exploits individual insecurity, creates false needs and offers counterfeit solutions. Children
are particularly vulnerable to this sort of manipulation.
Children are increasingly becoming the target of advertising because of the money they
spend themselves, the influence they have on their parents spending and because of the
money they will spend when they grow up. Marketing used to concentrate on sweets and
toys; it now includes clothes, shoes, fast foods, sports equipment and computer products.
Therefore, marketing to children should be carefully restricted. In particular, Internet
and TV adverts should be banned. Such advertising favorsthe cost of these services rather
than thatof children's values, health and integrity. The future of the planet will be at stake if
we allow advertisers to turn children into hyper consumers.

A court in Germany has ruled that the video-sharing site “YouTube” is responsible for videos on
its site that are posted illegally. The ruling said “YouTube” must do more to prevent posters uploading
copyrighted music videos to the site. The case was brought to the courts by the royalty-collecting
organization Gema, which represents over 64,000 German musicians and songwriters. Gema has been
fighting YouTube in the courts since 2010. The group accuses “YouTube” of using music online
without paying royalties to those who produced the tunes. “YouTube” may be forced to pay royalties for
all the video clips on its site. This could prove extremely costly for Google, the owner of “YouTube."
The court said it did not consider “YouTube” to be the copyright violator, but the user who
uploaded the songs. It said, however, that YouTube must implement stronger filters to block
copyrighted material. YouTube representatives say the site is not responsible for what users post to it.
They claim those who post copyrighted materials are at fault and that the YouTube site is simply a
platform for sharing. A spokesman said, «We remain committed to finding a solution to the music
licensing issue in Germany that will benefit artists, composers, authors, publishers and record labels, as
well as the wider YouTube community." Currently, around 60 hours of videos are uploaded to the
“YouTube” site every minute. www.headsup English .com

Migrant Smuggling is the facilitation, for financial or other material gain, of irregular entry into a
country where the migrant is not a national or resident. The criminals behind this highly lucrative business
seize the opportunity created by the need or desire of people to escape not just poverty and lack of
employment opportunities but also natural disaster, conflict or persecution.
The smuggling of migrants is a truly global concern, with a large number of countries affected by it as
origin, transit and host countries – points of destinations of the smuggled people. Profit-seeking criminals
smuggle migrants across borders and between continents. Assessing the real size of this crime is a complex
matter, owing to its underground nature and the difficulty of identifying when irregular migration is being
facilitated by smugglers. Smugglers take advantage of the large number of migrants willing to take risks in
search of a better life when they cannot access legal channels of migration.
Smuggled migrants are vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. Their safety and even their lives are often
put at risk: they may suffocate in containers, perish in deserts or drown at sea while being smuggled by
profit-seeking criminals who treat them as goods. As the crime is a clandestine one, accurate global figures
are difficult to come by. Nevertheless, it is estimated that two of the principal smuggling routes - leading
from East, North and West Africa to Europe and from South America to North America - generate about
$6.75 billion a year for criminals. However, the global figure is likely to be much higher.

Child labour refers to the employment of children in any work that deprives children of their
childhood, interferes with their ability to attend regular school, and that is mentally, physically, socially
or morally dangerous and harmful. This practice is considered exploitative by many international
organizations. Legislation across the world prohibits child labour. These laws do not consider all work
by children as child labour; exception includes work by child artists, family duties and supervised
training.
Child labour has existed to varying extents. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, many
children aged 5-14 from poorer families still worked in Europe, the United States and various colonies
of European powers. These children mainly worked in agriculture, home-based assembly operations,
factories and mining. Some worked nights shifts lasting 12 hours . With the rise of household income,
availability of schools and passage of child labour laws, the incidence rates of child labour fell.
In developing countries, with high poverty and poor schooling opportunities, child labour is still
prevalent. In 2010, sub-Saharan Africa had the highest incidence rates of child labour with several
African nations witnessing over 50% of children aged 5-14 working. They predominantly employed by
their parents, rather than factories. Poverty and lack of schools are considered as the primary cause of
child labour.
Globally the incidence of child labour decreased from 25% to 10% between 1960 and 2003,
according to the World Bank. Nevertheless, the total number of child labourers remains high, with
UNICEF and ILO acknowledging an estimated 168 million children aged 5-17 worldwide, were
involved in child labour in 2013.

Child abductions and kidnappings are on the increase, with almost 900 reported cases in the past year
alone. Thus, the abduction of children by people other than their parents rose twice as fast as parental
xa
abductions.
During 2013-14, 158 children were abducted by parents, 401 children were abducted by people other
than their parents, and 321 children were kidnapped. Kidnappings, which are defined by the use of force or
/e
fraud to remove a child, include cases such as children taken in return for a ransom. One-fifth of all
kidnappings recorded by police involve a child victim. The figures include both successful and attempted
crime. However, the charity Parents and Abducted Children Together (PACT) believes that many cases of
om
attempted abduction and kidnapping involving children are never recorded by police, and the true rates of
offending may be four times higher than police figures suggest.
Claude Knights, chief executive of the charity “Kids cape”, said the figures were an important
reminder to parents about the need to talk to children about so-called “stranger danger”. An experiment
c
carried out by the charity found that most children could be easily convinced to follow a stranger, even
where parents felt they had talked to them about the risks involved.

An estimated 158 million children aged 5-14 are engaged in child labour-one in six
children in the world. Millions of children are engaged in hazardous situation or condition
such as working in mines, working with chemicals and pesticides in agriculture or working
with dangerous machinery. They are everywhere but invisible; toiling as domestic servants
in homes, labouring behind the walls of workshops, hidden from view in plantations….
In sub-Saharan Africa, one child in there is engaged in child labour, representing 69
million children. In South Asia, another 44 million are at work.
Children living in the poorest household and in rural areas are most likely to be
engaged in children labour. Those burdened with household chores are girls. Millions of
girls who work as domestic servants are especially vulnerable to exploitation and abuse.
The UNICEF often interferes with children’s education Ensuring that all children go to
school and that their education is of good quality, is a key to preventing child labour.

Millions of children around the world are trapped in child labour , depriving them of their
s
childhood, their health and education , and condemning them to a life of poverty and serious
illnesses. Of course , there is work that children do to help their families in ways that are neither
m
harmful nor exploitative.
Recent global estimates based on data of UNICEF , the ILO ( International Labour Organization)
xa
and the World Bank indicate that 168 million children aged 5 to 17 are engaged in child labour .
Some 120 million among them are below the age of 14, while a further 30 million children in this
age group – mostly girls – perform unpaid household chores within their own families. In addition,
/e
millions of children suffer in the other worst forms of child labour, including slavery and slavery-
like practices such as forced and bonded labour and child soldiering, sexual exploitation , or are
used by adults in illicit activities , including drug trafficking, working in mines . Vast majority of child
om
labour is found in rural settings and informal urban economy , children are predominantly employed
by their parents rather than factories . Poverty and lack of schools are considered as primary cause
of child labour .
Despite a steady decline in child labour , progress is far too slow . At current rates , more than
c
100 million children will still be trapped in child labour by 2020 . The continuing persistence of
child labour poses a threat to national economies and has severe negative short and long term

consequences for the fulfillment of children’s rights guaranteed by the United Nations Convention
of the Rights of the Child ( CRC ) including denial of education and frequent exposure to violence.

Due largely to the amount of information available on the Internet it is becoming easier for
everyone to plagiarize. Whether intentional or not, schools and universities consider plagiarism a form of
m
academic dishonesty and unethical practice.
Obvious plagiarism includes buying a paper or copying another person 's work and presenting it as
xa
yours. This can be information or items copied from Web pages, books and newspapers, TV shows or any
other artwork. Essentially, it is a form of piracy; a theft of the author 's intellectual property. The
educational systems are so tolerant that the rate of plagiarism scandals has doubled in recent years.
/e
One of the scholars pointed out, "Before trying to avoid plagiarism, we must tackle the causes
which include: the lack of academic integrity, the students' ignorance, their difficulty with citing, in
addition to the weaknesses in language skills". The University of California, at Devis explains that the
om
effects of plagiarism are ranging from damaging the student's academic career and causing serious legal
problems to tarnishing the institution's reputation.
The policies detailing the guidelines on the problems of plagiarism that have been established,
should be explained by teachers periodically. Whenever ideas or works are borrowed from another
c
source, students must cite or quote that source .This is the best way to minimize plagiarism.

Consumer safety officials in the USA have warned Americans against using
toothpaste made in China because it may be poisonous. The Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) declared that Chinese toothpaste may contain a toxic chemical commonly used in
antifreeze – a substance that protects car engines from freezing in cold weather. The FDA
s
said that while there have so far been no reports of toothpaste poisoning in the US,
m
contamination has been reported in Mexico and Panama. It has also found traces of the
chemical, diethylene glycol (DEG), in a shipment at the US border with Mexico and at retail

stores in Florida and Puerto Rico. The agency said it did not want to alarm the public, but
feels it needs to err on the side of caution and that it was better to be safe than sorry.
/e
DEG is actually found in other foods. It is used in low-cost sweeteners and as a
thickening agent in cooking. The FDA’s concerns are that it should not be included in the
m
ingredients of toothpaste. Officials say the chemical can be dangerous to children and to those
with kidney or liver disease. The FDA’s Deborah Autor expressed her fears over the substance,
co
saying: "Our concern today is potentially about all toothpaste that comes in from China.” She
added: "Our estimate is that China makes up about US$3.3 million of the US$2 billion US
toothpaste market." The FDA reported that DEG has been improperly added to a variety of

other Chinese products, including sedatives and cough syrups. In Panama, last September, over
40 people died after taking a cough mixture containing DEG.

Bribery is the crime of giving or receiving something of value to influence official action. Both the person

Bribery is illegal for two reasons: Firstly, it usually involves a public official using his or her office for
personal gain. Secondly, it can cause officials to make unfair decisions that affect citizens. Bribery is a very old

crime. There is evidence of bribery dating back more than 4,000 years.
Usually, a person who bribes a public official is paying to get special treatment. This special treatment can

Bribing a public official is the most common type of bribery. In the United States, officials convicted of
