EVOLUTION OF I.T
IN BUSINESS
What Is Information
Technology?
Information technology (IT) is
the use of computers, storage,
networking and other physical
devices, infrastructure and
processes to create, process,
store, secure and exchange all
forms of electronic data.

ElectronIc AccountIng
MachIne Era : (1930-1950)
Accounting machine, was
generally a calculator and printer
combination tailored for a specific
commercial activity such as
billing, payroll, or ledger.Although
it was an efficient processor of
accounting tasks, the machines
were large and cumbersome. https://www.computerhistory.org/revolution/punch

The MAInframe Era
(1950- Present)
Mainframe computers originated in the
1950s.The IBM 701 was one of the first
commercially successful mainframe computers.
In the 1960s, IBM introduced the System/360
mainframe. This made it possible for businesses
and organization to use mainframes for a wider
range of tasks, such as data processing,
accounting, and inventory control.

The peRsonal computer Era
(1981- Present)
The appearance of the IBM PC in 1981 is
usually credited as the beginning of the PC
era because this machine was the first to
become widely adopted in businesses.
Proliferation of PCs in the 1980s launched
a spate of personal desktop software tools
—word processors, spreadsheets, electronic
presentation software, and small data
management programs.These PCs were

The ClIENt/server Era
(1983- Present)
In client/server computing, desktop or
laptop computers called clients are
networked to server computers that provide
the client computers with a variety of
services and capabilities. Computer
processing work is split between these two
types of machines. The client is the user
point of entry, whereas the server provides
communication among the clients, processes
and stores shared data, serves up Web https://phantran.net/evolution-of-it-infrastructure/
pages, or manages network activities.
enterPrISe compuTING Era
(1992- Present)
In the 1990s, firms turned to networking
standards and software tools that could
integrate disparate networks and
applications throughout the firm into an
enterprise-wide infrastructure.The
resulting IT infrastructure links different
types off computer hardware and smaller
networks into an enterprise-wide network
so that information can flow freely across
the organization and between the firm

and other organizations.
cloud compuTING Era
(2000- Present)
The growing bandwidth power of the
Internet has pushed the client/server model
one step further, towards what is called the
“Cloud Computing Model.” Cloud computing
refers to a model of computing that
provides access to a shared pool of
computing resources (computers, storage,
applications, and services) over a network,
often the Internet. These “clouds” of
computing resources can be accessed on an
as-needed basis from any connected device https://www.spiceworks.com/tech/cloud/articles/w
