Your WIN modem is a PCI bus internal modem with Plug-and-Play (PnP) feature. PnP works only under Windows 98/ME/2000 and Windows XP. PnP feature allows you to install your modem without you knowing and setting up Com Port address and IRQ numbers.
System Requirements.
You must have an Pentium, or compatible PC with at least Pentium 233 MHz speed. You also need Windows 98, ME, XP, NT 4.0 or 2000. If you do not have any one of these, do not use this modem card, instead use our A series hardware controller modem. Features and benefits. PCI bus interface allows data to move from modem to PC as fast as PCI bus; thus eliminating the constraint of the slow UART serial port. PnP feature provides one step and easy installation. Both ITU-T V.92 and V.90 56K protocol enabled in driver so the modem can connect with either standard without upgrading or changing driver. In data mode, download and receive data at up to 56K bps with compatible ISP. Full feature data, fax and voice provide powerful, all-inclusive functions for home and office. Runs under Windows 98/ME/2000/XP with Pentium 233 or faster computer. Microsofts PC 2001 compliant.
Installations
Before you install the modem into your PC, check this:
I.
Before you take out your old modem and put your new 56K modem in, follow these steps. l Under Windows system, you must remove your old modem driver and Com port by following these steps: Click on Control Panel > Modem then highlight the name of your old modem. Click Remove. Next from Control Panel click on Systems > Device Manager > Ports (Com & LPT). Highlight the Com port of the old modem and click on Remove. Then click on the Modem and make sure your old modem is removed. l l l l Shut down your computer and take out your old modem. Open your computers case and find an empty PCI bus slot. Insert your modem card into your PCI bus slot. Tighten the screws on the modem bracket. Then close your computer case and power on. Wait for Windows to start. You will see the following screens.
When Windows boots for the first time after the modem card is installed, Windows will report that it has found a new hardware. It will open the Add New Hardware Wizard reporting that it searches for the new drivers for an Unknown Device. 3
Click on the Next button. Windows will propose to search for the best drivers for your device.
Click on the Next button. Insert the CD that contains the modem drivers. To enter the path name (for example D:\Driver\w98) for the location of the driver. Do not use any driver files from your Windows CD. All the driver files are on the CD supplied with the modem. 4
Click on the Next button. The Agere driver for PCI Modem will be proposed.
Click on the Next button. Windows will build a database for this modem.
l l
Click again on the Next button to finish the installation of the modem driver. Windows will find an wave device of the modem, it will auto-detect the correct files and copy them onto your disk. After Windows installs the driver, check to see whether it occupies the same com port or not by clicking on the Modem from Control Panel. Your new WIN modem should use the same Com Port number.

Your fax modem has two modular telephone jacks on the back of the board. One is marked LINE SYMBOL or WALL SYMBOL and the other marked PHONE SYMBOL. If your wall outline is not a modular type, you can purchase an inexpensive converter at most electronics stores.
Your modem must be connected to phone outline that has an RJ11 jack. RJ11 line is sometimes called a single line phone. If you use a PBX or business phone system, make sure the extension line is an RJ11 outline.
1.
Plug one end of the phone cord that came with the modem into the modem jack marked LINE SYMBOL or WALL SYMBOL. Plug the other end of the same phone cord into the wall jack. Make sure you do not plug the phone cord into the modem jack marked PHONE SYMBOL. The PHONE SYMBOL jack is for you to plug an ordinary telephone set.
2.
Connecting your phone lines. You can also connect a telephone set to your modem, enabling you to use the phone when the modem is not in used. The phone set can be used in your voice mail application software. (Refer to your software manual). Simply connect the phone cord from your phone set to the jack in the back of the modem that is labeled PHONE SYMBOL. NOTE: If you plug the phone cord into the wrong jack in the modem (switch the LINE SYMBOL and PHONE SYMBOL plug), the modem will dial but will not connect to the other computer.
56K bps speed can be achieved only when downloading or receiving data from an ISP (Internet Service Provider). The revolutionary breakthrough of 56 Kbps is made possible by utilizing the digital telephone network in the ISP location or corporate central sites. These speeds cannot be achieved with modem-to-modem connections. Because this technology bypasses the analog-to-digital conversion in the ISP site, in the downstream path, 56K protocol can use a larger portion of the network bandwidth. Thus making the downloading faster. Before February 1998, there were two incompatible 56K standards, namely, X2 and K56Flex. If an ISP implements the X2, you cannot connect to 56K with K56flex (however, you can still connect to 33.6K). After February 1998, the ITU-T committee has endorsed a preliminary standard which will make X2 and K56Flex compatible. The new standard is called ITU V.90 standard. Before you can use it, your ISP must have implemented V.90 on their equipment. 2. What is V.92 and V.44?
ITU-T recommendations V.92 and V.44 are the new international standards for analog modems. They improve 9
the features of the former standards V.90 and V.42bis with simple yet powerful changes designed to enhance the inter-net experience. The new features of V.92 are as follows: Fast connect, which decreases start-up times on recognized connections. Modem on hold, which allows the user to place the modem on hold when an incoming call is identified. PCM upstream, which increases the upstream transmission rate up to 48 kbits/s under the best line conditions.
V.44 updates the older compression standard V.42bis. V.42bis was created ten years ago and predates the World Wide Web. V.44 addresses the content changes from the last ten years and can provide significantly increased throughput. As the central-site architecture begins to move towards V.92, most of the existing infrastructure only supports V.90 equipment. This modem supports both V.92 and V.90 with a fallback to V.34 for connections where a
V.92 or V.90 connection is not negotiated. 3. How do I use the voice features?
The voice feature is actually a digital voice messaging system. Like your old tape answering machine, your voice modem answers a phone call, plays greeting, and records callers voice mail just like an answering machine. However, your voice modem can do more. All voice message, greetings and playbacks are converted into digital files. These files can be played using your sound card. You can also take your sound card WAV files and play it to the modem or use it as a message. You can also

retrieve you messages from a touch tone phone outside. Powerful features include pager notification, fax on demand are available in software such as Bitware, QuickLink, Supervoice and Winfax. The modem is compatible with all the popular voice fax software. 4. What is WIN modem?
WIN modem means that modems can be used only under Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP operation system. 5. I connected to AOL at 57,600 bps, but it is very slow when downloading files or getting my email, why?
Your modem can only go as fast as the other side can send data. AOL has 12 million users. Imagine if half of the 12 million users get on line. Try AOL during off peak hours and see the difference.
Check the following things: (a) The phone cord from the wall jack (telephone company) is plugged into the jack label WALL or LINE in the modem. (b) Plug a regular phone into the Phone jack and lift it up to hear a dial tone. (c) If you have a voice mail feature from your phone company (answering machine service), make sure the message waiting tone is clear. In other words, you should not hear the fast tone. Clear your message waiting. 3. After I got connected, different software will report different connection speeds. Or why different modem report different speeds? There are two speeds reported by the modem and your software. The DTE speed is the transmission speed from your modem to your PC. The Line Speed or the Connected at xxxxxx speed reported by the modem is the carrier speed or the actual speed the modem will transmit data through the phone line to the other end. Because your modem has data compression feature, it is actually sending more data to your PC after it decompresses the data from the other end. Your software and modem should report the Line Speed rather than the DTE speed. Because of line noise conditions, your modem may connect at slower speed for each call. The speed will also drop if the phone line get noisy after you are connected.
