Working with
Application Software
Part-2
Bitmap Image
Bitmap (or raster) images are stored as a
series of tiny dots called pixels.
Each pixel is actually a very small square that
is assigned a color, and then arranged in a
pattern to form the image.
When you zoom in on a bitmap image you can
see the individual pixels that make up that
image.
Bitmap graphics can be edited by erasing or
changing the color of individual pixels using a
program such as Adobe Photoshop.

Vector Image
Unlike bitmaps, vector images are not based on pixel patterns,
but instead use mathematical formulas to draw lines and curves
that can be combined to create an image from geometric objects
such as circles and polygons.
Vector images are edited by manipulating the lines and curves
that make up the image using a program such as Adobe
Illustrator.
Vector images have some important advantages over bitmap
images:
Vector images tend to be smaller than bitmap images.
That’s because a bitmap image has to store color information for
each individual pixel that forms the image.
A vector image just has to store the mathematical formulas that
make up the image, which take up less space.

Graphics Software
In computer graphics, graphics software refers to a
program or collection of programs that enable a person
to manipulate images or models visually on a computer.
Computer graphics can be classified into distinct
categories: raster graphics and vector graphics, with
further 2D and 3d variants.
Many graphics programs focus exclusively on either
vector or raster graphics, but there are a few that
combine them in interesting ways.
It is simple to convert from vector graphics to raster
graphics, but going the other way is harder. Some
software attempts to do this.

Types of Graphics Software
Word processors: The name implies, have an emphasis on working mainly with text. In recent
years, however, word processors have made significant changes to incorporate graphics tools in
the software. Word processors can now be used to combine text and graphics for many
documents such as brochures, booklets, flyers, and postcards. Example: Microsoft Word, Corel
WordPerfect.
Publishing software: Known as desktop publishing software, can also combine text and graphics
but the tools in this breed of software are much more sophisticated. Desktop publishing software
offers tools for precise control over text and graphics placement, leading, kerning, and some
image editing functions. High-end desktop publishing software has the power to handle layouts
for books, magazines, and other large publications. Example: Corel VENTURA, QuarkXPress,
Adobe PageMaker.
Illustration software: Although not technically considered layout software, is also beginning to
incorporate more and more word processing and text manipulation features. Many of the
illustration programs have the ability to flow text, check spelling and grammar, and adjust
kerning and line spacing. It's becoming more common to use illustration software for page layout
on smaller projects such as postcards, greeting cards, brochures, business cards, letterhead and

booklets. Example: CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator. 8
Types of Graphics Software
Creative printing software: A market that has boomed recently as inkjet printers have
become more affordable. This software is especially designed for creating greeting
cards, postcards, business cards, signs, posters, t-shirt designs, and other crafts.
Example: Print Artist, The Print Shop, PrintMaster.
Presentation software: Designed for creating on-screen presentations, reports,
overhead transparencies, and slideshows. Like all the software mentioned above, it
allows you to combine both text and graphics in a single document, but the final output
is not always intended for printing.
Web Publishing Software: Another development in recent years that is common among
all the types of software above, is the ability to publish your work on the Internet. The
low-end software will have the basics such as sending your files through e-mail or
creating animated greetings; some may have basic Web page creation tools. The high-end
software will have more sophisticated Web publishing tools for exporting to HTML or
PDF (portable document format).

Clip Art
Clip art is a collection of pictures or
images that can be imported into a
document or another program.
The images may be either raster
graphics or vector graphics.
Clip art galleries many contain anywhere
from a few images to hundreds of
thousands of images.
Today, clip art is used extensively in both
personal and commercial projects,
ranging from home-printed greeting
cards to commercial candles.

Multimedia
Multimedia means that computer information can be represented
through audio, video, and animation in addition to traditional media
(i.e., text, graphics drawings, images).
Multimedia is the field concerned with the computer-controlled
integration of text, graphics, drawings, still and moving images
(Video), animation, audio, and any other media where every type of
information can be represented, stored, transmitted and processed
digitally.
Hypermedia can be considered as one of the multimedia
applications.
