MEANING OF COLOUR
Colour can be defined as any pigment used to add beauty to a drawing. Colour is used
to make an artwork appear beautiful and solid. The study of science has shown that
colour is present in light. There are a lot of scientists that has come up with this proof.
But one of such great scientist is SIR ISAAC NEWTON. He discovered the colours of
the spectrum through the use of a PRISM.
The colours of the SPECTRUM ARE ALSO CALLED RAINBOW COLOURS. They are
arranged in this form: RED,ORANGE, YELLOW,GREEN, BLUE,INDIGO and VIOLET. We
use the acronyms ROYGBIV to remember the arrangement of the colours of the
spectrum or rainbow.
CLASSES OF COLOUR
Colour can be classified into the following classes: 1.Primary colours2.Secondary
colours3.Tertiary colours4.Intermediate colours
5. Complimentary colours / contrasting colours6.Harmonious colours 7.Warm colours
8.Cool colours 9.Natural colours10. Neutral colours.
A. PRIMARY COLOURS: These are also known as the basic or fundamental
colours. The Primary colours are those colours that cannot be mixed to be gotten, i.e.
they are colours that one cannot mix any colours to get them. They are: BLUE, RED and
YELLOW. They can be mixed to get other colours but other colours cannot be mixed to
get them. When equal amounts of Red, Blue and Yellow pigment such as paint is
combined, black is produced. By adding the colours together to produce black, we call
these SUBTRACTIVE COLOURS.
B. SECONDARY COLOURS: These colours are obtained by the mixture of equal
proportion of two primary colours. Examples: Red colour+ Yellow colour= Orange
colour; Red colour+ Blue colour= violet/purple; Blue colour+ Yellow colour= Green
colour. The secondary colours are, orange, violet/purple and green colours.
C. TERTIARY COLOURS: These colours are gotten from the mixture of the
mixtures of one primary and one secondary colour.
Examples are: Yellow + Orange = Yellowish Orange
Red + Orange = Reddish Orange Yellow + Green = Yellowish
Green
Blue + violet = Bluish Violet
D. NEUTRAL COLOURS: these are those colours that only radiate light and
darkness. They are black and white.
