Final Script in UCSP – Cultural Relativism, Ethnocentrism and Xenocentrism
Scene 1 – Cultural Relativism by Lanz Aleckzl De Castro
Members:
Taga-awat - Josh – Joshua Cruz , Andrew Jay Belo

Culture 1 – James Andrei Castillo, Raven Kaye Villegas, Alessandra May Pepito, Khaled Juriel M.
Equipado ,Emman Oliver Togonon

Culture 2 – Mark Andrew Abuniawan, JL Mangubat, Princess Nicole P. Cuasay, Lanz Aleckzl De
Castro

Josh: Hi Andrew! I’m wondering, when two cultures meet, do they usually fight for their own
culture or do they try to understand each other’s culture?

Andrew: That’s a good question. We don’t always know what will happen in such situations.

Josh: In our case, I’m glad we’ve managed to understand each other’s cultures without judging or
discriminating.

Andrew: Of course, I know we’re not the type to be judgmental. I’m really happy that we met.

(As they continue walking, they see two groups arguing.)

Josh: Look, Andrew, I think those two groups are fighting, but I don’t know why.

Andrew: Yes, it seems like they’re in a dispute. Let’s go over there and find out.

(As they approach, they hear the following from both groups.)

Mark: Your culture is trash!!

Annica: No one wants your culture!!

James: You’re the one who is trash!!

Raven: You don’t even know what you’re talking about!

Alessandra: Judger!!

Andrew: What is happening here?

Emman: They’re judging our culture!

JL: We all know that having multiple wives is a sin/wrong!

Khaled: That is part of our culture, and you can’t understand it because our cultures are different.

Lanz: Your culture is wrong about it!

James: No, your culture is wrong because having multiple wives is acceptable in our culture.

Joshua: Stop it, neither of you is wrong. We have different cultures, which means different
opinions, beliefs, and ways of living.
Andrew: In your culture (pointing to Group 1), having only one wife is allowed, and having more is
considered a sin. In your culture (pointing to Group 2), having one or more wives is acceptable
and part of your tradition. Both perspectives are valid and right within their own contexts.

Josh: We need to stop judging and criticizing other cultures.

Andrew: Both of you need to understand that having different cultures is okay. You both have
your own beliefs and practices, and you should respect and understand each other’s cultures
while living peacefully.

Mark: Oh, we’re sorry for this argument.

James: We accept your apology, and we’re sorry too.

Josh: Let’s strive to live peacefully and respect each other’s cultures.

Both Groups: Let’s make that happen.

Scene 2 – Ethnocenterism by Andrew Jay Belo

(At the market, while shopping, Andrei notices something unusual.)
Andrei: Honey, look at that Muslim woman she have so many men with her.
Raven: What’s the matter, honey? Don’t judge; they might just be her siblings.
Andrei: Are siblings always with her? They don’t look like siblings; look, the woman is holding
hands with the men.
Raven: Stop it, honey, they might hear you.
Raven: You should just ask them to clear things up.
(Approaches Annica and asks)
Andrei: Hello, miss. Good morning. I’m not intruding; I’m just curious. Who are the men with you?
Annica: Oh, them? Hahaha, they’re my husbands.
Andrei & Raven: What??
Raven: Is this for real?
Annica: Yes, hahaha.
Raven: I thought they were your siblings.
Andrei: I told you, honey, I was right.
Raven: Why do you have so many husbands? Isn’t that against your religion?
Andrei: It makes you look bad, miss. Aren’t you embarrassed?
Annica: (laughing) No, it’s normal for us Muslims; it’s part of our culture. We believe in a different
god; Allah is our only god.
Andrew: Also, as her husbands, we are responsible for taking care of and loving her.
Mark Andrew: That’s right. According to our belief, as long as we fulfill our duties as her
husbands, we can practice this tradition.
JL: Also, this tradition is highly respected in our culture because it’s a valued heritage from our
ancestors.
Emman: Additionally, we follow this tradition because, according to our belief, having multiple
spouses means you always have support through hardship and prosperity and can love fully. Do
you need to know anything else?
Andrei: No, now we understand the significance of your culture.
Raven: We apologize for judging your culture instead of understanding its importance to you.
Annica: It’s okay. Just remember not to judge other cultures hastily because we don’t know their
significance to the people or their heritage.
Andrei: Thank you for clarifying and helping us appreciate other cultures.
Raven: Were sorry again.
Andrei: Goodbye, and thanks again.
