Tutorial 5

1. Define the following terms

a. Elevation
b. Backsight
c. Change point
2. Explain how surveyors and engineers can often ignore the error caused by earth curvature
and refraction.
3. A two peg test was carried out with the level setup between A and B (AB = 40 m) and then
3m behind B. staff readings listed in the order taken are A = 1.552 m, B = 1.085 m, B = 1.533
m and A = 2.004 m. compute the collimation error and the correct reading at A.
4. The following readings were taken between benchmarks UBL1 (RL 982.448m) and Corner
Manhole #45 (RL 986.245 m). The backsight and foresight distances were kept the same.
Readings (in metres) listed in the order taken are 0.288 (BS) on UBL1, 0.987 (FS) and 0.305
(BS) on CP1, 1.405 (FS) and 0.596 (BS) on STN1, 1.605 (FS) and 0.661 (BS) on STN2, 1.992 (FS)
and 1.056 (BS) on CP2, and 0.704 (FS) on Corner Manhole #45. Prepare, reduce, check, and
adjust the notes using rise and fall method.
5. The following consecutive readings (all in metres) were taken with a level and a staff of 4m
on continuously sloping ground at intervals of 20m. 0.805, 1.535, 2.260, 3.575, 1.215, 2.635,
3.875, 2.325, 3.725. The reduced level of the first point is 123.743m. Enter the above
reading on a level field book. Calculate the
a. RL of each station using HPC method
b. The gradient of the line joining the first and last point.
c. Draw the longitudinal section of the area with a horizontal scale of 1 : 1000 and
vertical scale of 1 : 100.
6. The following image shows a level run carried out across a road and a billboard that runs
across the road.

RL = 101.797m
Figure 1

a. Draw up a level field book and record the observation.

b. Reduce the levelling using HPC method and adjust making all the necessary checks.
Allowable misclosure is ±10√𝒏 𝒎𝒎.
c. The development control code requires that an advertisement board should have a
height of 5.2m above the road. Does the billboard meet the specification?

N.B. for a staff held upside down record reading as negative

7. The following table shows an extract from a field book with some missing entries. Insert the
missing figures check and adjust. Acceptable misclosure is ±𝟓√𝒏 𝑚𝑚.
